Hi everybody!

We're sure that all of your musicals this past weekend were outstanding.... wish we could have attended all of them! Along with more than 4,000 other choral directors, Randy heard 30 amazing choirs at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conference in Kansas City last week, and had a chance to talk with Rich Campbell, the composer of "In Those Years, No One Slept" He's a really nice, super energetic, talented man, and he is still excited that you performed his music so well........See the attached picture.

If you want to hear a really good college choir, please join us for the Susquehanna University Choir concert next Monday, March 11 at 7:30 at Eastminster. (See #1 below) Hope you can be there.

March 5, 2019 - CONCORDE EMAIL

Hello Concorde,

First, it looks as though we won't have enough of you to sing next Monday, March 11 during the Susquehanna University Choir concert at Eastminster. Although 18 of you replied (6 of you did not), there are only 9 who can sing for sure and 3 who were not sure. So, we're not going to do it, which is OK...... I know you'd do it if you could, but you're all so busy. However, you're all invited and encouraged to come to the concert if you can.

For parents and family who plan to attend the concert in Towson on Sunday afternoon, a map of the Goucher College campus is attached in the blue box at the top of this page. The concert is at Goucher College, 1021 Dulaney Valley Rd., Baltimore, MD 21204, Dorsey College Center, Kraushaar Hall (#4a) on the map. When you enter the campus from Dulaney Valley Rd., pass through the entry gate and it will be the first building on the left.

Now...... here again is the important information for Saturday and Sunday.

Thank you for including this weekend's rehearsal and concert in your busy schedules. I know it takes a big chunk of time, so I hope it will be a rewarding experience for you to perform with singers from other choirs and help to raise funds for underprivileged children. Please be sure to be in the sanctuary at Eastminster by 9:30 on Saturday morning, bring your black folder with four pieces of music, a PENCIL, a water bottle and something to eat since we won't get to stop for lunch. You can wear casual clothes on Saturday.

Since we have never practiced the three songs that you'll sing with the other groups, it's really important that you take about 30 minutes before Saturday to read the following information, mark your music and sing along with the practice tracks on our website.

1. MUSIC INFORMATION FOR MARCH 9 AND 10
For the "With One Voice Choral Festival" at Goucher College on March 9 and 10, you will sing three songs in a larger group that includes all the other choirs that will be there. There are specific directions that you need to know for each of the three pieces, and this information is listed below. You do not need to memorize this music and you will not be singing it alone without the other choirs. You will have a 10 minute time slot just for Concorde when you'll sing "The Road Home", "Agnus Dei" and "Some Nights".

PLEASE NOTE: Rehearsal tracks for the following three pieces are on our website at Rehearsal Tracks at the bottom of the page. The songs are not difficult, but you need to mark the places where you are not supposed to sing, so you need to go over them once or twice before March 9. We'll have a very quick rehearsal of all three songs on Saturday, March 9 at 9:30 a.m. in the Eastminster sanctuary before we get on the bus to go to Towson.

ANTHEM OF PEACE (the rehearsal track is a recording of a choir, but your notes are not highlighted)

  •   First 16 measures (instrumental) will be omitted
  •   Do not sing measures 17 through 32
  •   Concorde sopranos and altos enter at measure 33
  •   Tenors and basses join at measure 40
  •   Sing your usual parts at measure 57
  •   Concorde sings Choir 1 at measure 7
  •   Sing your usual parts at Measure 89

WITH ONE VOICE - Concorde sings the SATB parts beginning at measure 11 ....... not the CC (Children's Choir) part. (the rehearsal track is piano only playing all four parts, starting at measure 11)

WE ARE ONE  (the rehearsal track is a recording of a choir, but your notes are not highlighted)

  •   Concorde does not sing until page 5, measure 39
  •   A quartet from Concorde will sing measures 39 through 56
  •   Everybody sings measure 57 to the end.

February 25, 2019 - CONCORDE EMAIL
Hello Concorde,

OK..... don't let this go to your head, but you were fabulous yesterday! Despite having so few rehearsals and singing so much music, you sounded like you've been singing together for years. It's a given that you always sing in tune, but what's special is your attention to phrasing, dynamics and diction. Sure, there are a few entrances and notes that need repair, but there was nothing yesterday that would have made your listeners think you didn't know what you were doing. Boy, was it ever fun to direct you! Thank you to our soloists, our Hamilton speakers, to Collin for joining us to play drums and to all of you for your perfect attendance. The people at Eastminster want to adopt you!

We still need to take a survey to learn your availability for March 11 and May 18. We ran out of time yesterday, so we ask you to respond to our survey as soon as you read this. Please go to Concorde survey, fill in your name and answer Yes, No or Not Sure. If you're not sure, please let us know why by leaving a note in the appropriate box.

Here again are the details about both dates:

  •   On Monday, March 11, the Susquehanna University Choir will sing at Eastminster at 7:30 p.m. Three former Honors Choir/Concorde members (Alex Strausbaugh, Jason Pandelidis and Carter Anstine) are members of the Susquehanna Choir. Their director, Dr. Voorhees, has graciously offered to have Concorde sing during the concert. If enough of you are able to attend, I'm thinking we could sing "The Road Home" and Carter, Alex and Jason could join us. So the question is: Can you attend the concert on Monday, March 11 at 7:30? (We would rehearse with Jason, Alex and Carter at 7 before the concert, but if you can't be there until later, it's OK) Please check your calendar and respond to the survey. It would be great fun if it works!
  •   On Saturday, May 18, Concorde has been contracted to sing at Cross Keys Village in New Oxford. A bus has been reserved for us, and it will leave Eastminster at 12:30. The concert is at 2:00 p.m., and we will be back at Eastminster no later than 4:00 p.m. I know that there are several proms that day, but I'm hoping we'll get back early enough that you can sing and go to prom all on the same day. So the question is: Can you sing with Concorde that day? Please check your calendar and respond to the survey.

February 19, 2019 - CONCORDE EMAIL
Hi Concorde!

The congregation of Eastminster is really, really looking forward to hearing you sing on Sunday morning. Fortunately, it's going to snow tomorrow and NOT on Sunday..... finally we're getting a break on a Sunday! When you arrive on Sunday, please enter the glass doors of the sanctuary. It's possible that the 9 a.m. service may not be quite finished when you arrive, so please wait quietly in the back. As soon as the service is over, please go to the front of the church and sit in the front rows. We'll rehearse in the sanctuary from 9:45 to 10:30 and then go to the choir room until the service starts at 11:00. Please be sure to bring a black folder and the music for Agnus Dei. If you think you need the music for anything else, bring that too (see the repertoire list below). Also, if you still have your copy of the Durufle Requiem, please bring that too.

TWO BIG QUESTIONS..... PLEASE CHECK YOUR CALENDAR

On Monday, March 11, the Susquehanna University Choir will sing at Eastminster at 7:30 p.m. Please check your calendar and let me know on Sunday. It would be great fun if it works!

On Saturday, May 18, Concorde has been contracted to sing at Cross Keys Village in New Oxford. So the question is: Are there any of you who cannot sing with Concorde that day? Please check your calendar and let me know on Sunday.

February 12, 2019 - CONCORDE EMAIL

Hello Concorde!

Your attendance has been outstanding and you sound wonderful! Please do try to find some time to rehearse "Agnus Dei" before February 24. It was definitely stronger the other night, but a few rough spots remain. The only way it'll work is if each of you is totally confident about your notes.

As I explained on Sunday, the concerts with the Harrisburg Choral Society that were scheduled for May 4 and 5 have been canceled. The Choral Society was unable to assemble an orchestra for that weekend, so they rescheduled one concert for Saturday March 11. I am not available that day, and since it was not on our original schedule, I made the decision that we would not participate. I was looking forward to the opportunity for you to sing a major work with an orchestra and adult chorus, but it's just not going to happen after all. If you still have your copy of the Durufle "Requiem", please bring it with you to Eastminster on Feb. 24. "Psalm 150" is yours to keep or you can just throw it away if you don't want it.

February 6, 2019 - BROADWAY SHOW SELECTION

SCROLL DOWN FOR WEEKLY EMAIL OF FEBRUARY 5

Hi everybody,

In 1785, Scottish poet Robert Burns wrote (in his poem "To a Mouse, On Turning Up Her Nest with a Plough"):
"The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry". Well, that's what has happened to our plans for musicals when we go to New York on June 12.

Two things just happened that will require us to start all over in choosing our musicals:

  •   Yesterday, it was announced (unexpectedly) that "Anastasia" will close on March 31 which obviously means that we can't go to see it in June.
  •   Today, I called Broadway.com and learned that, sadly, tickets are no longer available for "Come From Away". The theater's not very large, the show is really popular, and we just couldn't finalize our order in time to take advantage of group ticket prices (partly because of those two weeks when we missed rehearsals.)

So........you'll all need to select your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices again when you come to rehearsal at St. Joseph Church on Sunday evening. The three musicals that are now offered are listed below. All three are relatively new on Broadway and all are "song and dance" musicals with excellent reviews (and ticket prices that fit our budget.) Please read the following synopses carefully, talk to your friends and make your decision before you arrive at rehearsal, if possible. Please note that we must have a minimum number of 1st place votes for each musical to qualify for group ticket discounts. The tickets will be ordered no later than Tuesday next week, so please be sure that you cast your votes on Sunday.

Also, please remember that your ticket is provided for you as a gift from the Simpson Fund..... pretty good deal, huh?

Hopefully, this will be the last time we have to vote........😬
Thanks for your patience!

P.S. Best wishes to all of you who will be singing in District Chorus this weekend.

MUSICAL CHOICES
1. Kiss Me, Kate! (minimum 12)
Starring Tony Award winning actress Kelli O’Hara, Kiss Me, Kate! centers on a cast putting on a musical version of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew and the conflict on and off-stage between Fred Graham, the show's director, producer, and star, and the leading lady, his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi.
A musical comedy masterpiece by songwriting genius Cole Porter, Kiss Me, Kate shines as perhaps Broadway's most sparkling achievement. This is the winner of the first-ever Tony Award for Best Musical, alive with onstage romance, backstage passion, comedy high and low, a hilarious dash of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, and eternal Broadway classics, including "Too Darn Hot," "So In Love" and "Always True To You In My Fashion." This revival is musical comedy heaven……. a brand-new Kiss Me, Kate!

2. My Fair Lady (minimum 12)
Featuring a scene-stealing performance by Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz, Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady has been named the best Broadway musical of 2018 by The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and Time Magazine. NY1 raves, “Every so often a revival comes along that reminds you how indispensable great theater can be.” Entertainment Weekly cheers, "Lincoln Center Theater’s My Fair Lady is a thing of beauty, a sumptuous new production of the most perfect musical of all time.”
Boasting such classic songs as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” and “On the Street Where You Live,” My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady.” But who is really being transformed? In this "jubilant revival, the beloved musical comes alive in all its glory” (Variety).

3. The Prom (minimum 10)
See the next hit from Broadway’s Musical Comedy Dream Team – the geniuses behind The Book of Mormon, Aladdin, The Drowsy Chaperone, Elf, Mean Girls…

What happens when four stars leave the bright lights of Broadway (Because their show was abruptly canceled) and take leading roles in a small-town controversy that’s making national headlines about a girl whose wish to take her girlfriend to the prom is denied by school authorities? Big drama. Bigger laughs. And the biggest musical showstoppers in years! You’ll agree with Variety, The Prom is “musical comedy heaven".

Hello Honors Choir!

We had another amazing rehearsal on Sunday....... you worked so hard, and you sounded SO good. We're not quite caught up yet, but we'll get there with our two remaining rehearsals. Fortunately, it decided to snow today instead of on Sunday, so we should be able to get a lot more done this Sunday. Who knows? Maybe some or all of the music might be memorized? Maybe?

PLEASE NOTE: Remind has settled with Verizon. Verizon customers will still receive text messages from Senior Honors Choir through Remind.

There's lots of new information in this email, so please read carefully.

In tonight's email:

  •   Rehearsal this Sunday, February 3 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
  •   Solo audition results
  •   SENIOR solo auditions this Sunday, February 3 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
  •   Rehearsal on Sunday, February 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.....location TBD
  •   NY trip final payments due this Sunday, and final choice for shows.
  •   We need information about your school musical productions
  •   Dreamwrights' play "The Liar" starts this Friday.

1. REHEARSAL THIS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3.
Choir rehearsal this Sunday will begin at 2:00 and end at 4:00 p.m. We'll go through all our music and attempt to sing as much as possible from memory. Auditions for the tenor and bass solos in "Daniel, Daniel" will be held during the guys' rehearsal upstairs. Please be sure you have your music, a pencil and water.

2. SOLO AUDITION RESULTS
Thanks to all who auditioned for solos on Sunday. As always, our decision is especially difficult because there is SO much talent in Honors Choir. We admire all of you, not only for your talent, but also for your courage and poise as you audition in front of us and your peers. As is our custom, we have chosen two soloists for each solo spot, and we will alternate between concerts (That also provides us with a backup in case a soloist is sick on the night of a concert.) Here are the results:

Soloists listed as #1 will sing on March 17 and May 12.
Soloists listed as #2 will sing on April 7 and June 2.

1000 Beautiful Things - 1. Holly Hinchcliff 2. Julia Sowers
Who Lives, Who Dies - 1. Grace Montgomery 2. Rachel Ritchey
Still I Rise - 1. Annie Long, Madi Horner, Sarah Weller 2. Paige Gordon, Amelia Asaro, Marina Hopkins
Make Them Hear You - 1. Aidan Fraser 2. Jacob Schmitt

Thanks again to all! Soloists, please be prepared to sing your solo at the microphone for this Sunday's rehearsal.

3. SENIOR SOLO AUDITIONS THIS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3
Auditions for Senior solos will be held this Sunday between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. Half of the group will audition for Michal and the other half for Randy. Please go downstairs to sign in and then go directly up to the sanctuary. If you live more than 20 minutes away from the church, you do not need to arrive until about 1:20.

Our purpose is to be sure that your solo is fully prepared, memorized, and 2 1/2 minutes or less. If you need to have us accompany you, you must provide legible sheet music written in the key in which you will perform it. If there are cuts or repeats, please mark them clearly. It must be printed on both sides of the paper (with no plastic sleeves, please) and held in a 3-ring binder.

Our records indicate that the following seniors are planning to audition: Caroline Blalock, Danica Brickley, Rachel Conklin, Katie Fonda, Anna Fraser, Emily Gettman, Denver Heim, Brandi Himes, Robert Hirko, Marina Hopkins, Natalie Kerchner, Elva Li, Annie Long, Megan Lutz, Brynn MacDonald, Grace Montgomery, Myles Naylor, Maura O'Mahony, John Patterson, Chloe Reeser, Rachel Ritchey, Lauren Smith, Julia Sowers, Charley Weinstein, and Mikella Wisler. If anyone was missed, please contact Randy at rdy1949@gmail.com.

4. "MAKE-UP" REHEARSAL ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10
Our concert scheduled for Sunday, February 10 has been cancelled because of our two missed rehearsals. However, we will rehearse that evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. We cannot rehearse at Eastminster because another group has reserved the church for that time. The location has not yet been determined, but it will be somewhere in the central York area. We'll let you know the location when we see you this Sunday and in next Tuesday's email.

5. NY TRIP FINAL PAYMENT DUE THIS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3 and FINAL SHOW SELECTION
Final payment for the NY trip is due this Sunday, February 3. If you paid a deposit of $50, the remainder of $65 is due. (If you have already paid the entire cost of $115, then no payment is due.) Checks will be written to "York County Honors Choirs"....... Please write the student singer's name in the memo line so that we can be sure to apply your payment to the correct person.

There are now 67 of you who will be going to NY on June 12. Your preferences for musicals on Sunday were as follows (each number represents the total of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place votes for that musical): Anastasia = 51, My Fair Lady = 46, Come From Away = 43, The Prom = 36, and King Kong = 16.
Based on that outcome, the three musicals for which we will purchase tickets are Anastasia, My Fair Lady and Come From Away. During rehearsal this week, we'll ask all of you to make your final choice of your 1st, 2nd and 3rd preferences from those three musicals.

In case you missed it, we are scheduled to sing in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12. The cathedral is the world's largest Anglican cathedral and the fifth largest Christian church in the world.

6. WE NEED INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL MUSICALS
We need information about all of your school musicals so that we can share it with everyone in Honors Choir.
Please choose one person from your cast, crew or pit to go to our online survey at High School Musicals
Please be sure to include the names of all Senior and Junior Honors choir cast, crew and pit participants.

January 29, 2019 - CONCORDE EMAIL

Hello Concorde!

We had a great rehearsal on Sunday and made a lot of progress with both "Agnus Dei" and "Some Nights". We'll rehearse again this Sunday, February 3 from 4:00 to 5:00 (please note the 15 minute extension.) We're going to continue to work on both songs (The rehearsal tracks for both songs are still posted on our website at Rehearsal Tracks at the bottom of the page and on the Student Center page), and we're also going to sight-read through "Anthem of Peace" and "We Are One".

Please be sure to bring a black folder and all of your Concorde music. You'll need it for "Agnus Dei" and all the rest of your Concorde music except for "Some Nights".

Thanks again to all the guys who auditioned for the solo in "Some Nights"! Joseph Patterson and Myles Naylor will alternate as soloists (but the dates haven't been determined yet.)

On February 10, Concorde will rehearse from 8:30 to 9:00, at the end of the Make-up rehearsal. The location has not yet been determined.

Your sight reading and musicianship are so impressive, and it's a joy to work with you. Thank you for giving even more of your time to sing in Concorde!

See you Sunday!

January 22, 2019
Hello Honors Choir!

Well, it happened......again! At 10 a.m. on Sunday, we just couldn't be certain that the roads wouldn't be icy in the afternoon. We had heard so many pleas from PennDOT and the Governor to stay off the roads, and your safety is always our primary concern, so we decided to cancel the rehearsal..... again! Of course, by 1 p.m., the roads were dry and the sun was shining. It was cold and windy, but we probably could have had our rehearsal. So frustrating! This is the first time in 21 years of Honors Choir that we've missed two rehearsals in a row.

Naturally, this puts us way behind in our preparation for spring concerts. We've only sung through the music one time, haven't yet chosen soloists, haven't yet heard our senior soloists and we have only two rehearsals left. As a result, we have decided that, sadly, we must cancel our first concert on February 10. Your November concert proved how talented and prepared you can be, and we think it would not be fair to you or to your audience to attempt to present a concert that is less than excellent. So, on February 10, we will NOT sing at Grantham Church, but we WILL have a "make-up" rehearsal that day (maybe in the evening when we would have had the concert?) Please stay tuned for more information regarding the schedule that day.

PLEASE NOTE that there have again been changes to our rehearsal and audition schedule. Please read all of the following information carefully.

In tonight's email:
1. Rehearsal this Sunday, January 27 from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m.
2. Solo auditions this Sunday, January 27 from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m.
3. Sign up for SENIOR solo auditions on Sunday, February 3 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
4. An important message about "Remind" for Verizon customers.
5. New York trip show sign-ups this Sunday.
6. Sign up for Dreamwright's Talent Show - Saturday, March 2

1. REHEARSAL THIS SUNDAY, JANUARY 27
We'll rehearse this Sunday, January 27 from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. at Eastminster. We'll sing through all of our music, work on difficult spots, spend extra time on the women's and men's pieces and try to memorize as much as we can. Rehearsal tracks for "Still I Rise" and "Johnny Schmoker" are still on the website at Rehearsal/Audition Tracks and on the Student Center page, so please take a few minutes to practice your part before Sunday. BE SURE TO BRING A PENCIL.....

2. SOLO AUDITIONS THIS SUNDAY, JANUARY 27
Solo auditions will be held in the sanctuary this Sunday from 1:00 to 1:20 for sopranos and altos and from 1:20 to 1:30 for tenors and basses. Please sign in downstairs first. If you still wish to audition for one of the solos in choir, we need you to sign up right now online. Just go to  SOLO SIGN UP    or the Student Center page and select the first available sign-up # under the solo column of your choice, then click on the gray box to enter your First and Last Name and Email, then click Sign Me Up!

We really need for you to sign up now if you think you might sing for the audition, so that we aren't caught off guard by more people than we planned for. If you sign up now, but change your mind later, you can just choose not to come to the audition. On the other hand, if you don't sign up now, you can still sing for us that day. We never had a chance to go over the solos in rehearsal, so be sure to practice the audition spots listed below.

Solo auditions will be held this Sunday, January 27 from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m.

  1000 Beautiful Things (soprano or alto) - P. 12, meas. 43 to p. 15, meas. 55
  Who Lives, Who Dies.... - (soprano or alto) - P. 12, meas., 38 to p. 15, meas. 50
  Make Them Hear You (tenor or bass) - P. 3, meas. 14 to p. 4, meas. 21
  Daniel Daniel - P. 4, m. 21 (tenor) or P. 6, m. 37 (bass)
  Still I Rise - (soprano or alto) - Choose 1st solo starting on p. 2..... or 2nd solo starting on p. 6........ or 3rd solo starting on p. 12

3. SENIOR SOLO AUDITIONS ON SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3
IMPORTANT: So far, only 10 seniors have signed up, but 25 of you raised your hands on January 6 to indicate that you plan to perform. If you wish to perform a "senior solo", we need you to sign up now online so that we can plan our schedule. Just go to SENIOR CLASS SOLO or the Student Center page, type your name, tell us what your talent is (vocal, piano, flute, oboe, guitar, kazoo, wooden spoons....... whatever) and be sure to hit "Submit".

Seniors who wish to sing or play a solo during our concerts in March, April or May will need to perform for us on Sunday, February 3. Your solo must be no longer than 2 1/2 minutes, fully prepared and memorized. If you need to have us accompany you, you must provide legible sheet music written in the key in which you will perform it. It must be printed on both sides of the paper (with no plastic sleeves, please) and held in a 3-ring binder.

4. AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT "REMIND" FOR VERIZON CUSTOMERS
Verizon has now settled their fee structure with Remind. Verizon customers will still receive text messages from us through Remind. Disregard previous notice. Thank you.

5. NY TRIP SHOW CHOICES THIS SUNDAY
All forms and deposits for the New York trip should have been handed in by now. For those who did not already pay the full amount of $115, the remainder is due at the rehearsal on February 3. This Sunday, we'll ask you to choose your top three choices from a list of five Broadway shows.

6. SIGN UP FOR DREAMWRIGHT'S TALENT SHOW
> DreamWrights Center for Community Arts will be hosting a talent showcase/open mic fundraiser for performers aged 15 thru early 20s on March 2 from 7:30 – 9:30p. Their goal is to create a fun evening where students can gather and share their talents of voice, instrument, spoken word, or whatever moves them. Being In the heart of school musical season, it could be a good opportunity to promote any shows they may be a part of, practice their senior solos in front of an audience, or just hang out with other students who enjoy the arts. Also, if any students need to pick up a few service hours, they have several spots offering a minimum of 3-4 volunteer hours that they can offer (including two emcee roles). If you are interested in trying out for emcee or are interested in obtaining service hours as a volunteer, you can reach out to Mr. George Hirko directly at ghirko@comcast.net for details.

January 20, 2019
Good Sunday morning again to all of you!

After MUCH thought and discussion, we have decided to cancel rehearsal today. Based on the predicted dropping temperatures, possible un-treated roads and wind, we feel it's wiser for everyone to stay off of the road today, both student and parent drivers.

Because this has been an unusual situation for a two week cancellation, would each of you PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE spend at least one hour today and possibly commit additional time this week to rehearse your music? Having to miss this this much consistent rehearsal does put us behind schedule. Knowing and memorizing your music is crucial to our preparation, delivery and success of our program. Whatever you can do will be a help. Rehearsal tracks are available on the Student Center page of the Honors Choirs website.

We will communicate additional information in Tuesday night's email in regards to our upcoming schedules.

Let us know if you have any questions or comments.

New York payments can be sent to York County Honors Choir
PO Box 827
York, PA 17405

Solo auditions will still be held next week on January 27 and Senior Solo auditions will be held on February 3.

Again, be warm and safe!

MICHAL and RANDY

January 15, 2019

Hi Everybody!

Ah, Monday morning quarterbacking is so easy! If we could go back and change the past, the Eagles would have won and we would have had our rehearsal on Sunday afternoon....... At 10 a.m. on Sunday, it definitely looked like the temperature would stay below freezing all day and it would probably snow in the afternoon. As it turned out, road conditions in the afternoon were just about normal.......... oh well....... better safe than sorry. Worse, it looks like we're going to see a repeat weather event this weekend. 😖 We'll watch it closely and let you know by 11 a.m. on Sunday at the latest if we need to cancel again. Be sure to check your email and Remind message before you leave home. We really hope we can have this rehearsal because we really need it!

Good morning!

Both the senior and junior honors choirs rehearsals are canceled for today.

Because of the snowy roads and colder temperatures, we feel it is important to err on the side of caution. This change will impact future scheduling, so be sure to read next Tuesday night's email carefully for details. Be safe and cautious today if you are going out. And if possible, please review and practice your music before next week's rehearsal.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact one of us.

Stay warm and dry,
MICHAL and RANDY

Hello Honors Choir!

Fabulous......our rehearsal on Sunday was fabulous! You sang all the way through eight songs, and you accomplished everything we had on our schedule. We may actually be able to start singing some things from memory this week! How amazing is that? Of course, the long-range weather forecast is calling for snow "showers" (whatever that means) on Saturday evening and possibly Sunday morning, so if you think there's any possibility that the rehearsal might be canceled, be sure to check your email before you leave. We will let you know at LEAST two hours in advance (by 11:30 a.m. on Sunday or before) if we are making any changes in our schedule. If you don't hear from us, then we're proceeding with the rehearsal as planned.

As we told you on Sunday, Rich Campbell, the composer of "In Those Years, No One Slept" wrote that your performance of his piece was "moving and powerful" and that he congratulates you for "successfully navigating the challenging sections of this piece with confidence" and "for employing your impressive musicianship in this performance." As if to prove that he really meant what he said, he has included a photo of your performance in his email advertising (which goes to thousands of choral directors)......... see the picture at the end of this email. He also has included your recording of his song on his website at Rich Campbell. He does not list the name of our choir, but just click on "WATCH" and you'll hear yourselves.

January 8, 2019 - CONCORDE EMAIL
Hi Concorde!

Great rehearsal on Sunday......Thank you for your patience and focus and wonderful singing! We got a lot done in just 45 minutes.

We'll rehearse again this Sunday, January 13 from 4:00 to 4:45 and spend much of our time working on "Agnus Dei" and on the choral parts and solo in "Some Nights". The rehearsal tracks for both songs are now posted on our website at Rehearsal Tracks at the bottom of the page. (The link is also located on the Student Center page.) It's your job to rehearse your part with the rehearsal tracks for both songs before Sunday. Rehearsal will go much more quickly (and be a lot more fun) if each of you is sure of your part.

We'll have solo auditions for "Some Nights" on January 20. You may audition for any of the solos in Concorde or Honors Choir.

Looking forward to seeing you again on Sunday!
Randy

Hello Honors Choir,

We just heard the recording of your wonderful singing on November 17 at the Pullo......... and it's truly excellent! If you already ordered CD's or downloads, they will be sent to you no later than Thursday this week, so you should have them in time for Christmas if you're giving them as presents. If you have not yet placed your order, you should do so today if you want to receive it by Christmas. It's worth it, because it's a really beautiful recording! Just go to this link, Sound Works store, at the Sound Works website to order a CD for $20 or a download of all the tracks for only $14 (go down to the second row to find our concert listing).

Since you sang about the Armistice of 1918 and we remembered the 17 million people who died, here's an inspiring Christmas story from World War I:

Did you know? On December 7, 1914, Pope Benedict XV suggested a temporary hiatus of the war for the celebration of Christmas. The warring countries refused to create any official cease-fire, but on Christmas the soldiers in the trenches declared their own unofficial truce. Starting on Christmas Eve, many German and British troops sang Christmas carols to each other across the lines, and at certain points the Allied soldiers even heard brass bands joining the Germans in their joyous singing. At the first light of dawn on Christmas Day, some German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allied lines across no-man’s-land, calling out “Merry Christmas” in their enemies’ native tongues. At first, the Allied soldiers feared it was a trick, but seeing the Germans unarmed they climbed out of their trenches and shook hands with the enemy soldiers. The men exchanged presents of cigarettes and plum puddings and sang carols and songs. There was even a documented case of soldiers from opposing sides playing a good-natured game of soccer. The so-called Christmas Truce of 1914 came only five months after the outbreak of war in Europe and was one of the last examples of the outdated notion of chivalry between enemies in warfare. It was never repeated—future attempts at holiday ceasefires were quashed by officers’ threats of disciplinary action—but it served as heartening proof, however brief, that beneath the brutal clash of weapons, the soldiers’ essential humanity endured. Check out this brief video about this amazing story.

PLEASE NOTE: We will not send our weekly email to you next week (because it's Christmas Day......), so our next email will come to you on New Year's Day (two week's from today.....)

In tonight's email:
1. NY Trip registration form and deposit is due at January 6 rehearsal.
2. Don't forget to practice for your audition!

After a childhood of violence and anger, he is now a world-class opera singer who is a star at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Vienna State Opera. Hello Honors Choir,

In 1999, President George H.W. Bush came to York to speak in the Strand Theater. The York County Honors Choir, a brand new group in its second season, was asked to sing the National Anthem prior to his speech. We arrived at the theater and were led to our place on the risers behind the curtain. We asked if we would have an opportunity to meet President Bush, but the Secret Service agent said "No, absolutely not." We were told to stay on the risers and wait. Then we saw President Bush come in through the back door and walk with all of the Secret Service agents to the wings on stage right. He was so close, but we couldn't talk with him....... Then, suddenly, out of the darkness, there he was..... walking right into the middle of our group....... he just decided he wanted to meet us, and he told the Secret Service guys that he was going to do it whether they wanted him to or not. He greeted all of us, shook hands, and thanked us for being there to sing. He was so friendly and encouraging. (Unbelievably, there are no pictures of President Bush with our group because most people didn't have cell phones at the time, and even if we did, they were ancient flip phones with very poor cameras at best....... and it was such a surprise that nobody even thought to take a picture anyway). It happened so fast, and then he went back to the side of the stage. After we sang the National Anthem, President Bush praised and thanked our singers at the beginning of his speech. Since his passing at the age of 94 last week, the news has been filled with the stories of his love of family, heroic service in the Navy and decades of service to his country. Our little encounter with him proved that he was also kind, friendly, thoughtful and connected to everyone and everything around him.

November 27, 2018
Hi Everybody,

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! Since our concert on the 17th, we've heard again from Rich Campbell, the composer of "In Those Days, No One Slept". He continues to be really engaged with us because you were the first high school group to perform his new composition. He has posted his thanks to you on social media, and he's looking forward to hearing the recording of your performance of his composition. You can see pictures of the concert in the brand new December Honors Choir Newsletter and on the Honors Choir Facebook page .

****Please consider purchasing a recording of the concert. It's available online at the Sound Works website as a CD for $20 or as a download of all the tracks for only $14 (go down to the second row to find our concert listing) and it'll be ready in about three weeks, so it will make a great Christmas gift. We're fortunate that Sound Works has agreed to record our concert at no cost to the Honors Choir, so they are dependent on sales to repay them for the time and costs involved in setting up before the concert, recording during the entire concert, tearing down after the concert, editing and mixing the live recording, mastering the final mix, creating the artwork, providing CD's and cases, and mailing the CD's. Their recording is always excellent and your support of their dedication to the Honors Choirs is greatly appreciated.

Hello Honors Choir,

You were SO SO good on Saturday....your singing was inspired and the emotions you conveyed clearly connected with our audience! Your enthusiasm, energy, and intensity were infectious, and it really did feel like you were "telling your stories" as you sang. It was some mighty fine singing and a wonderful way to start the 21st season of Honors Choir!

We are really fortunate that our board of directors offers us the opportunity to perform in beautiful theaters and churches and to share our music with outstanding choirs like the Penn State Glee Club. Dr. Kiver wrote the following to all of us:  "Thank you so much for hosting the Glee Club yesterday. It was a delight to share the program with your fine choir and to be back in the Pullo - a really nice space. I thoroughly enjoyed your program and I admire what you are able to achieve. The Penn State students had a good time and a number of them said how much they enjoyed the day. It is always a pleasure to collaborate with you and I hope it is not too long before we can work together again. Once again, many thanks, and please pass on our appreciation to your board and all who helped make the concert possible."

Thank you to each and every one of you and to all of our soloists for making it happen. We're really excited for the rest of the season, but we wish we didn't have to wait until January to see you all again..........

In tonight's email:
1. Audition music and rehearsal tracks
2. Order your recording of Saturday's concert
3. Formal photo for everyone.
4. Will you join us for the New York Trip?
5. Distinguished Young Women information for juniors.

1. AUDITION MUSIC AND REHEARSAL TRACKS. Please check the pink sheet in your packet of new music to be sure you have all seven pieces of music for auditions. Two songs are printed on white sheets....... "Star Spangled Banner" and pages 9 and 10 of "Give Me Your Stars to Hold" (because the real music hasn't arrived yet) and there are five other full copies of music. The rehearsal tracks will be available early next week on the Student Center page of our website.

2. ORDER YOUR COPY OF THE RECORDING OF SATURDAY'S CONCERT NOW!
Your singing was so memorable, so why not consider purchasing a CD or download of the concert? They're available online at the Sound Works website (go down to the second row to find our concert listing) and they'll be ready in about three weeks, so they'd also make a great Christmas gift. You should know that Sound Works records our concerts at no cost to the Honors Choirs, so your purchase of CD's and downloads is the only way they are reimbursed for their service to us. The recordings are always excellent, and we urge you to consider getting copies for yourselves and your family.

3. FORMAL PHOTO FOR EVERYONE
A copy of the photo of the choir that was taken on Saturday will be given to each one of you when we get together again in January. It's a gift from the Honors Choir to you! Free!

November 20, 2018 - CONCORDE EMAIL
Hello Concorde!

"In Flanders Fields" was really, really beautiful on Saturday. Well, OK.... the oooh's at the very end got messed up somehow, but that doesn't matter because nobody in the audience remembered that moment since it was so good otherwise, and we can fade out before that on the recording, so it's like it never happened. Anyway, you were wonderful on Saturday and at the Capitol Theater on Tuesday. Thank you!

There will be quite a bit of extra music for you to learn in January, but we'll wait till then to give the music to you. You only have to memorize one piece, and you'll be able to use music for all the others, so I think we'll be able to move through it pretty quickly.

Although the photo of the full choir will be given to you for free, the photo of Concorde is not free. If you wish to order a copy for yourself or family, please use the attached order form at the top of this page and send it directly to Mike Inkrote with your payment. The picture will probably be ready in a couple of weeks.

Please continue to look as far ahead as possible for schedule conflicts. You've all been at our first two concerts (Woo-Hoo! Amazing! That hardly ever happened in previous years!), and it would be great to have you all there every time (probably not possible, but I can dream, can't I? 🤔) If you are a junior who's interested in Distinguished Young Women, you'll notice that it is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, the same day we're singing with Harrisburg Chorale in the afternoon. Don't let that stop you from applying for DYW, though. If you are chosen to participate in DYW, you obviously would not be able to sing with Concorde that day, but that's OK........ if you want to do DYW, you should go for it! We'll work out the conflicts later.

It's a pleasure to work with all of you. Thank you for your extra commitment of time to make Concorde excellent!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

 Hello Honors Choir!

What an amazing rehearsal we had on Sunday..... pretty much non-stop singing for more than two hours! We're about 95% ready for our concert, and we'll be 100% after we fix a few spots in our rehearsals at the Pullo on Saturday. We've had only five rehearsals to learn a LOT of challenging music (some people have had only three or four rehearsals due to marching band and musical), but you've worked really hard and you're blessed with talent, so we're going to have a great concert.

**BLACK FOLDERS! Since you'll probably need to use music for several selections, please be sure to bring a plain black folder (with your name inside) with you on Saturday. The only three pieces you'll need are "Armistice 1918", "Sweet Rivers" and "In Those Years, No One Slept".

**PLEASE be sure you've made plans to have alterations completed on your formal outfit before our concert this Saturday.

November 6, 2018 - CONCORDE EMAIL
Hello Concorde,

Concorde will rehearse this Sunday, Nov. 11 from 4:00 to 4:45 in the sanctuary at Eastminster. We're going to rehearse "In Flanders Fields" from memory, and we'll also work on "The Road Home", "Shed a Little Light" and "Why We Sing" for Nov. 13 at the Appell Center.

Here's some updated information about your performance on Tuesday, November 13:
WHERE: Capitol Theater in the Appell Performing Arts Center, 50 N. George St., York
TIME: Arrive at 5 p.m., Sing at 5:40, Leave at 6:00.
PARKING: Good news! Street parking and parking in the garage on Philadelphia St. across from the Appell Center is FREE...... beginning at 5 p.m. I don't know if that means you'd have to pay in the garage if you arrive at 4:55, so if you arrive at exactly 5:00 and then hurry to the Capitol theater, you should be able to park for free. If you're being dropped off and picked up, your driver can pull directly in front of the Capitol Theater on George St.
WHERE TO ENTER: Enter through the main doors of the Capitol Theater (right on the corner of Philadelphia and George Streets). We'll direct you upstairs to an area where we can line-up and warm-up. If you have a problem parking or finding us, please text someone in the group or Randy (717-891-4536) to let us know you're OK.
ATTIRE: Please wear your formal Honors Choir outfit to the Appell Center if you can. If you need to bring your outfit, you can change quickly when you get there.
REPERTOIRE: We're going to have a piano after all! We're planning to sing "Shed a Little Light", "The Road Home" and the short version of "Why We Sing". (We're only allowed to sing for 10 minutes, so there won't be time to do "Gamaya".)

We are participating in the Annual Meeting of the Cultural Alliance of York, and we'll be celebrating the 15 years of service of Mary Anne Winkelman as President of the Cultural Alliance. Mary Anne is also a member of the board of directors of York County Honors Choirs.

Thanks.... see you Sunday!
Randy
