Hi Everybody!

Ah, Monday morning quarterbacking is so easy! If we could go back and change the past, the Eagles would have won and we would have had our rehearsal on Sunday afternoon....... At 10 a.m. on Sunday, it definitely looked like the temperature would stay below freezing all day and it would probably snow in the afternoon. As it turned out, road conditions in the afternoon were just about normal.......... oh well....... better safe than sorry. Worse, it looks like we're going to see a repeat weather event this weekend. ūüėĖ We'll watch it closely and let you know by 11 a.m. on Sunday at the latest if we need to cancel again. Be sure to check your email and Remind message before you leave home. We really hope we can have this rehearsal because we really need it!

PLEASE NOTE that there have been significant changes to our rehearsal and audition schedule. Please read all of the following information carefully.

In tonight's email:

We'll sing through all of our music, work on difficult spots, spend extra time on the women's and men's pieces and try to memorize as much as we can. Rehearsal tracks for "Still I Rise" and "Johnny Schmoker" are now on the website Student Center page at Rehearsal/Audition Tracks, so please take a few minutes to practice your part before Sunday.  We will NOT have solo auditions this Sunday! BE SURE TO BRING A PENCIL.....

If you have not yet turned in your form and deposit for the trip to New York on June 12, your non-refundable deposit of $50 or the full amount of $115 along with the NY Trip Permission Form is due this Sunday. The "NY Trip Permission Form" and the "NY Trip Scholarship Form" are found on the FORMS page (under "Sr Honors Choir Forms") on our website. IMPORTANT: If you wish to audition for one of the solos in choir, we need you to sign up right now online. Just go to  SOLO SIGN UP  and select the first available sign-up # under the solo column of your choice, then click on the gray box to enter your First and Last Name and Email, then click Sign Me Up! Sign up link is also located on the Student Center page.

We need to know approximately how many people want to audition for each solo so that we can plan our schedule. If you sign up now, but change your mind later, you can just choose not to come to the audition. On the other hand, if you don't sign up now, you can still sing for us that day, but we'd really appreciate it if you would sign up now if you think you might sing for the audition.

Their goal is to create a fun evening where students can gather and share their talents of voice, instrument, spoken word, or whatever moves them. Being In the heart of school musical season, it could be a good opportunity to promote any shows they may be a part of, practice their senior solos in front of an audience, or just hang out with other students who enjoy the arts. Good morning!

Both the senior and junior honors choirs rehearsals are canceled for today.

Because of the snowy roads and colder temperatures, we feel it is important to err on the side of caution. This change will impact future scheduling, so be sure to read next Tuesday night's email carefully for details. Be safe and cautious today if you are going out. And if possible, please review and practice your music before next week's rehearsal.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact one of us.

Stay warm and dry,
MICHAL and RANDY

January 8, 2019
Hello Honors Choir!

Fabulous......our rehearsal on Sunday was fabulous! You sang all the way through eight songs, and you accomplished everything we had on our schedule. We may actually be able to start singing some things from memory this week! How amazing is that? Of course, the long-range weather forecast is calling for snow "showers" (whatever that means) on Saturday evening and possibly Sunday morning, so if you think there's any possibility that the rehearsal might be canceled, be sure to check your email before you leave. We will let you know at LEAST two hours in advance (by 11:30 a.m. on Sunday or before) if we are making any changes in our schedule. If you don't hear from us, then we're proceeding with the rehearsal as planned.

As we told you on Sunday, Rich Campbell, the composer of "In Those Years, No One Slept" wrote that your performance of his piece was "moving and powerful" and that he congratulates you for "successfully navigating the challenging sections of this piece with confidence" and "for employing your impressive musicianship in this performance." As if to prove that he really meant what he said, he has included a photo of your performance in his email advertising (which goes to thousands of choral directors)......... see the picture at the end of this email. He also has included your recording of his song on his website at Rich Campbell. He does not list the name of our choir, but just click on "WATCH" and you'll hear yourselves.

December 18, 2018
Hello Honors Choir,

We just heard the recording of your wonderful singing on November 17 at the Pullo......... and it's truly excellent! If you already ordered CD's or downloads, they will be sent to you no later than Thursday this week, so you should have them in time for Christmas if you're giving them as presents. If you have not yet placed your order, you should do so today if you want to receive it by Christmas. It's worth it, because it's a really beautiful recording! Just go to this link, Sound Works store, at the Sound Works website to order a CD for $20 or a download of all the tracks for only $14 (go down to the second row to find our concert listing).

Since you sang about the Armistice of 1918 and we remembered the 17 million people who died, here's an inspiring Christmas story from World War I:

Did you know? On December 7, 1914, Pope Benedict XV suggested a temporary hiatus of the war for the celebration of Christmas. The warring countries refused to create any official cease-fire, but on Christmas the soldiers in the trenches declared their own unofficial truce. Starting on Christmas Eve, many German and British troops sang Christmas carols to each other across the lines, and at certain points the Allied soldiers even heard brass bands joining the Germans in their joyous singing. At the first light of dawn on Christmas Day, some German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allied lines across no-man‚Äôs-land, calling out ‚ÄúMerry Christmas‚ÄĚ in their enemies‚Äô native tongues. At first, the Allied soldiers feared it was a trick, but seeing the Germans unarmed they climbed out of their trenches and shook hands with the enemy soldiers. The men exchanged presents of cigarettes and plum puddings and sang carols and songs. There was even a documented case of soldiers from opposing sides playing a good-natured game of soccer. The so-called Christmas Truce of 1914 came only five months after the outbreak of war in Europe and was one of the last examples of the outdated notion of chivalry between enemies in warfare. It was never repeated‚ÄĒfuture attempts at holiday ceasefires were quashed by officers‚Äô threats of disciplinary action‚ÄĒbut it served as heartening proof, however brief, that beneath the brutal clash of weapons, the soldiers‚Äô essential humanity endured. Check out this brief¬†video¬†about this amazing story.¬†

PLEASE NOTE: We will not send our weekly email to you next week (because it's Christmas Day......), so our next email will come to you on New Year's Day (two week's from today.....)

In tonight's email:
1. NY Trip registration form and deposit is due at January 6 rehearsal.

Hello Honors Choir,

In 1999, President George H.W. Bush came to York to speak in the Strand Theater. The York County Honors Choir, a brand new group in its second season, was asked to sing the National Anthem prior to his speech. We arrived at the theater and were led to our place on the risers behind the curtain. We asked if we would have an opportunity to meet President Bush, but the Secret Service agent said "No, absolutely not." We were told to stay on the risers and wait. Then we saw President Bush come in through the back door and walk with all of the Secret Service agents to the wings on stage right. He was so close, but we couldn't talk with him....... Then, suddenly, out of the darkness, there he was..... walking right into the middle of our group....... he just decided he wanted to meet us, and he told the Secret Service guys that he was going to do it whether they wanted him to or not. He greeted all of us, shook hands, and thanked us for being there to sing. He was so friendly and encouraging. (Unbelievably, there are no pictures of President Bush with our group because most people didn't have cell phones at the time, and even if we did, they were ancient flip phones with very poor cameras at best....... and it was such a surprise that nobody even thought to take a picture anyway). It happened so fast, and then he went back to the side of the stage. After we sang the National Anthem, President Bush praised and thanked our singers at the beginning of his speech. Since his passing at the age of 94 last week, the news has been filled with the stories of his love of family, heroic service in the Navy and decades of service to his country. Our little encounter with him proved that he was also kind, friendly, thoughtful and connected to everyone and everything around him.

***Now's the time to purchase the recording of our concert at the Pullo. Just go to this link Sound Works store at the Sound Works website to order a CD for $20 or a download of all the tracks for only $14 (go down to the second row to find our concert listing). Hi Everybody,

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! Since our concert on the 17th, we've heard again from Rich Campbell, the composer of "In Those Days, No One Slept". He continues to be really engaged with us because you were the first high school group to perform his new composition. He has posted his thanks to you on social media, and he's looking forward to hearing the recording of your performance of his composition. You can see pictures of the concert in the brand new December Honors Choir Newsletter and on the Honors Choir Facebook page .

****Please consider purchasing a recording of the concert. It's available online at the Sound Works website as a CD for $20 or as a download of all the tracks for only $14 (go down to the second row to find our concert listing) and it'll be ready in about three weeks, so it will make a great Christmas gift. We're fortunate that Sound Works has agreed to record our concert at no cost to the Honors Choir, so they are dependent on sales to repay them for the time and costs involved in setting up before the concert, recording during the entire concert, tearing down after the concert, editing and mixing the live recording, mastering the final mix, creating the artwork, providing CD's and cases, and mailing the CD's. Their recording is always excellent and your support of their dedication to the Honors Choirs is greatly appreciated.

Hello Honors Choir,

You were SO SO good on Saturday....your singing was inspired and the emotions you conveyed clearly connected with our audience! Your enthusiasm, energy, and intensity were infectious, and it really did feel like you were "telling your stories" as you sang. It was some mighty fine singing and a wonderful way to start the 21st season of Honors Choir!

We are really fortunate that our board of directors offers us the opportunity to perform in beautiful theaters and churches and to share our music with outstanding choirs like the Penn State Glee Club. Dr. Kiver wrote the following to all of us:  "Thank you so much for hosting the Glee Club yesterday. It was a delight to share the program with your fine choir and to be back in the Pullo - a really nice space. I thoroughly enjoyed your program and I admire what you are able to achieve. The Penn State students had a good time and a number of them said how much they enjoyed the day. It is always a pleasure to collaborate with you and I hope it is not too long before we can work together again. Once again, many thanks, and please pass on our appreciation to your board and all who helped make the concert possible."

Thank you to each and every one of you and to all of our soloists for making it happen. We're really excited for the rest of the season, but we wish we didn't have to wait until January to see you all again..........

In tonight's email:
1. Audition music and rehearsal tracks
2. Order your recording of Saturday's concert
3. Formal photo for everyone.
4. Will you join us for the New York Trip?
5. Distinguished Young Women information for juniors.

1. AUDITION MUSIC AND REHEARSAL TRACKS. Please check the pink sheet in your packet of new music to be sure you have all seven pieces of music for auditions. Two songs are printed on white sheets....... "Star Spangled Banner" and pages 9 and 10 of "Give Me Your Stars to Hold" (because the real music hasn't arrived yet) and there are five other full copies of music. The rehearsal tracks will be available early next week on the Student Center page of our website.

2. ORDER YOUR COPY OF THE RECORDING OF SATURDAY'S CONCERT NOW!
Your singing was so memorable, so why not consider purchasing a CD or download of the concert? They're available online at the Sound Works website (go down to the second row to find our concert listing) and they'll be ready in about three weeks, so they'd also make a great Christmas gift. You should know that Sound Works records our concerts at no cost to the Honors Choirs, so your purchase of CD's and downloads is the only way they are reimbursed for their service to us. The recordings are always excellent, and we urge you to consider getting copies for yourselves and your family.

3. FORMAL PHOTO FOR EVERYONE
A copy of the photo of the choir that was taken on Saturday will be given to each one of you when we get together again in January. It's a gift from the Honors Choir to you! Free!

Hello Concorde!

"In Flanders Fields" was really, really beautiful on Saturday. Well, OK.... the oooh's at the very end got messed up somehow, but that doesn't matter because nobody in the audience remembered that moment since it was so good otherwise, and we can fade out before that on the recording, so it's like it never happened. Anyway, you were wonderful on Saturday and at the Capitol Theater on Tuesday. Thank you!

There will be quite a bit of extra music for you to learn in January, but we'll wait till then to give the music to you. You only have to memorize one piece, and you'll be able to use music for all the others, so I think we'll be able to move through it pretty quickly.

Although the photo of the full choir will be given to you for free, the photo of Concorde is not free. If you wish to order a copy for yourself or family, please use the attached order form at the top of this page and send it directly to Mike Inkrote with your payment. The picture will probably be ready in a couple of weeks.

Please continue to look as far ahead as possible for schedule conflicts. You've all been at our first two concerts (Woo-Hoo! Amazing! That hardly ever happened in previous years!), and it would be great to have you all there every time (probably not possible, but I can dream, can't I? ūü§Ē) If you are a junior who's interested in Distinguished Young Women, you'll notice that it is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, the same day we're singing with Harrisburg Chorale in the afternoon. Don't let that stop you from applying for DYW, though. If you are chosen to participate in DYW, you obviously would not be able to sing with Concorde that day, but that's OK........ if you want to do DYW, you should go for it! We'll work out the conflicts later.

It's a pleasure to work with all of you. Thank you for your extra commitment of time to make Concorde excellent!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

 Hello Honors Choir!

What an amazing rehearsal we had on Sunday..... pretty much non-stop singing for more than two hours! We're about 95% ready for our concert, and we'll be 100% after we fix a few spots in our rehearsals at the Pullo on Saturday. We've had only five rehearsals to learn a LOT of challenging music (some people have had only three or four rehearsals due to marching band and musical), but you've worked really hard and you're blessed with talent, so we're going to have a great concert.

**BLACK FOLDERS! Since you'll probably need to use music for several selections, please be sure to bring a plain black folder (with your name inside) with you on Saturday. The only three pieces you'll need are "Armistice 1918", "Sweet Rivers" and "In Those Years, No One Slept".

**PLEASE be sure you've made plans to have alterations completed on your formal outfit before our concert this Saturday.

November 6, 2018 - CONCORDE EMAIL
Hello Concorde,

Concorde will rehearse this Sunday, Nov. 11 from 4:00 to 4:45 in the sanctuary at Eastminster. We're going to rehearse "In Flanders Fields" from memory, and we'll also work on "The Road Home", "Shed a Little Light" and "Why We Sing" for Nov. 13 at the Appell Center.

Here's some updated information about your performance on Tuesday, November 13:
WHERE: Capitol Theater in the Appell Performing Arts Center, 50 N. George St., York
TIME: Arrive at 5 p.m., Sing at 5:40, Leave at 6:00.
PARKING: Good news! Street parking and parking in the garage on Philadelphia St. across from the Appell Center is FREE...... beginning at 5 p.m. I don't know if that means you'd have to pay in the garage if you arrive at 4:55, so if you arrive at exactly 5:00 and then hurry to the Capitol theater, you should be able to park for free. If you're being dropped off and picked up, your driver can pull directly in front of the Capitol Theater on George St.
WHERE TO ENTER: Enter through the main doors of the Capitol Theater (right on the corner of Philadelphia and George Streets). We'll direct you upstairs to an area where we can line-up and warm-up. If you have a problem parking or finding us, please text someone in the group or Randy (717-891-4536) to let us know you're OK.
ATTIRE: Please wear your formal Honors Choir outfit to the Appell Center if you can. If you need to bring your outfit, you can change quickly when you get there.
REPERTOIRE: We're going to have a piano after all! We're planning to sing "Shed a Little Light", "The Road Home" and the short version of "Why We Sing". (We're only allowed to sing for 10 minutes, so there won't be time to do "Gamaya".)

We are participating in the Annual Meeting of the Cultural Alliance of York, and we'll be celebrating the 15 years of service of Mary Anne Winkelman as President of the Cultural Alliance. Mary Anne is also a member of the board of directors of York County Honors Choirs.

Thanks.... see you Sunday!
Randy

October 23, 2018 - CONCORDE EMAIL
Hello Concorde,

This is the first email that is being sent exclusively to the members and parents of Concorde. I hope you won't mind receiving two emails from us each week. Since Concorde's schedule is so busy this year, it will hopefully be less confusing for you and the rest of the members of Honors Choir to receive your information separately. I've included the email address for each of the singers and an address for one parent. If you want me to add, change or remove an email address, just let me know.

We had a rare 10 minutes on Sunday afternoon when every single member of Concorde was singing together at the same time! It doesn't happen very often, so it was pretty special. You sounded wonderful as you sang "In Flanders Fields", and I think you're going to be one of the best Concorde groups we've ever had.......really, I mean that! If you would take a few moments before our next rehearsal on November 4 to try to memorize your part for "In Flanders Fields", it would be very helpful.

Here's the real reason I'm writing to you tonight. Please read this carefully, and if it's necessary, respond to Randy at rdy1949@gmail.com as quickly as possible. Our schedule says that Concorde will sing at the Appell Center for a Cultural Alliance meeting between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13. However, they have just asked if we can sing right at 5:30, a little earlier than expected.

My question is this:  Can you arrive downtown at the Appell Center at 5 p.m. that night? If you can be wearing your formal outfit when you arrive, that would be great. (If not, you can bring it with you, and change quickly when you arrive).  You'll sing at about 5:40 and you'll be all finished and free to go by 6 p.m.

Please check your schedule for that night (Nov. 13) now. If you have any sort of conflict (sports, job, haircut, leaf raking.....) that will prevent you from being there at 5 p.m., please let me know immediately by replying to this email. (We can sing at 6:15 if necessary, but they'd really like us to sing at 5:30 if possible.) I need to confirm our starting time with the Cultural Alliance by Friday of this week.

A you know, I'm particularly nervous about any conflict at Central HS since there are 10 of you in Concorde. As we go through this school year, I will really, really appreciate knowing about any potential conflicts that any of you have as far in advance as possible.

Thanks to all of you for making time in your busy schedules for Honors Choir and Concorde. I think it's going to be a very special season of singing.

Randy

Hello Honors Choir!

We had an excellent rehearsal on Sunday even though we were missing about 25 of you, mostly because of parades. Your sight singing was wonderful as we worked our way through some very difficult music. Thank you for your outstanding hard work and your patience during a jam-packed rehearsal. We still have lots to do, but if we can continue to progress at the same rate this week, we'll be in a good place.

If you were not able to be at Sunday's rehearsal or if you must miss this Sunday's rehearsal, please take some time this week to sing through all your music (especially "Soldier's Song", "Sweet Rivers" (P. 3-12), "Armistice 2018" P. 12 to end), and "Johnny Has Gone For a Soldier") with your rehearsal CD or with the rehearsal tracks on the website.

PLEASE NOTE: If you wish to take advantage of the free seamstress services that will be offered on November 4 (see # 5 below), please be sure to respond to the survey by next Monday, October 15.

ABSENCES -Don't forget to remind us if you will be absent (even if you listed it on your conflict form) by sending an email to Michal at yorkhonorschoir1@aol.com. Please send absence information to Michal at that address instead of sending it to Randy, and remember to tell us the reason for your absence. We remind you that, while we are as flexible as we can possibly be, more than two absences may make it difficult for you to continue your membership in the choir. Please continue to plan ahead for our rehearsals and concerts.

Hello Honors Choir!

Sunday's rehearsal was excellent! Your singing was outstanding and we somehow managed to sing through a lot of music AND get fitted for formal outfits and hand in forms all at the same time. This week, we're going to work on the sections of music we didn't get to on Sunday and get pretty picky about notes, rhythms, breath marks, phrases and texts, so be sure you have a pencil..... you'll need it! Please read the information below carefully so you'll be prepared for this Sunday's rehearsal.

PLEASE NOTE: This Sunday, Tenors and Basses will start at 1:30 and Sopranos and Altos will start at 2:00 p.m.

Our thanks go to Beth Inkrote, our Administrative Assistant, and to all the parents who volunteered to assist us during the rehearsal and outfit fittings on Sunday: Elaine Fogdall, Patty Jacobs, Christy Guadagnino, Karen Montgomery and Shari Gordon ....... THANK YOU! And, of course, we say thanks again to Wendy Fraser and Stephanie Stoolmaker, our logistics coordinators for sorting through all your forms and keeping track of attendance every week!! They're always there in case you need them at each rehearsal and concert.

2. CONCORDE AUDITION RESULTS
Thank you to all who auditioned for Concorde on Sunday! It can be a scary experience to sing all alone in a room full of your peers, and we are so impressed with the quality of your auditions. "In Flanders Fields" is more challenging than it seems, especially when singing solo a cappella. Our decisions were very much influenced by your intonation (singing precisely in tune) as well as your vocal production, musicality and vowel formation. If you were not chosen, please do not think that you're not a good singer...... you are all good and you are all important contributors to Honors Choir and your school and church choirs.

Concorde will rehearse this Sunday from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. If you will be missing Honors Choir because you're marching in a parade on Sunday, it would be great if you could still attend the Concorde rehearsal as close to 4:00 p.m. as possible.

The members of the 2018-19 Concorde Vocal Ensemble are (in alphabetical order):
SOPRANO - Holly Hinchcliff, Madi Horner, Holly Jacobs, Brenna Richard, Rachel Ritchey, Lauren Smith, Mikella Wisler
ALTO - Hope Allen, Ainsley Buia, Rachel Conklin, Bevan Fogdall, Annie Long, Abi Trembly
TENOR - Dan Curry, Aidan Fraser, Denver Heim, Myles Naylor, Jacob Schmitt
BASS - Galen Brubaker, Matthew Guadaginino, James Moyer, John Patterson, Joseph Patterson, Adam Rilatt

Please check your schedule to be sure you are available for Concorde rehearsals each Sunday from 4:00 to 4:45 following Honors Choir rehearsals. You will also need to be available on Tuesday, November 13 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to sing at the Capital Theater of the Appell Performing Arts Center., on Saturday March 9 and Sunday, March 10 to sing at Goucher College in Towson, MD, on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5 to sing in Harrisburg and York, and Saturday, May 18 to sing at Cross Keys Village in New Oxford.

3. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR REHEARSAL SET-UP

We need two volunteers to set up chairs in our practice room each Sunday before rehearsal. If you live pretty close to the church and can arrive at about 12:45, we would really appreciate your help. If you can help, please contact Randy at rdy1949@gmail.com. Thank you!

Hello Honors Choir!

Congratulations........ We heard some wonderful singing in your auditions this past weekend! ("Armistice 1918" and "Sweet Rivers" have a couple of rough spots, but we can fix those when we get together....) We know we challenged you by asking you to sing individually at the end of the audition, but you showed us that you were prepared and willing to step outside your comfort zone. That's what leadership is all about! There are so many talented singers among you, and we are confident that this will be an outstanding choir! Thank you for your efforts and for fitting the audition into your busy schedules.

Please read this email carefully for information concerning our first rehearsal this Sunday . We are in the process of adjusting our email lists following auditions, so if you should not be receiving this email, please let us know at yorkhonorschoir1@aol.com.

In tonight's email:

Rehearsal this week, Sunday, September 30
All forms and payments due this Sunday
Concorde auditions this Sunday at 4 p.m.
Free seamstress service available on November 4

1. REHEARSAL THIS WEEK, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
  * 1:00 to 1:25 p.m. auditions in the sanctuary - Koby Fink, Oliver Givens, Denver Heim, Robert Hirko, Marina Hopkins, Hannah Katz, Margaret Mailey, Myles Naylor, Kendall O'Keefe, Jacob Schmitt, Nehemiah Stubbs, Charlotte Weinstein.  Please sign-in downstairs and be ready to sing at 1:00.
  * 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. - rehearsal, collection of forms and checks, and formal outfit fittings for everyone in Fellowship Hall, downstairs in Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
  * 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. - Concorde auditions (Optional for those who wish to audition.)

When you arrive on Sunday, go down the steps outside the church, sign in at the table that corresponds alphabetically to your last name, pick up your name tag,  hand in your forms, and then find your seat. During the first hour, you will go for formal outfit fittings, hand in your "Tuition and Outfit Order Form" with your check, and rehearse (kind of a 3-ring circus with several things going on at once.....).
Be certain to bring all your signed forms, your check, your music, a pencil and your water bottle.

PLEASE NOTE: If you need to be fitted for a formal outfit but cannot be there between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m., please contact Beth Inkrote at
binkrote5ychc@hotmail.com .

2. ALL FORMS AND PAYMENT ARE DUE THIS SUNDAY
You must bring with you four forms plus a copy of both sides of your health insurance card and your check on Sunday. Please help us by turning everything in this Sunday. If you are not prompt, it makes a great deal more work for our staff. We appreciate your attention to these details!

The following forms are due this Sunday. (If you have lost the forms, you can download another copy on the Forms page of our website.)

  * Medical Information Form and Health Insurance Card- Please complete the Medical Information Form carefully and accurately, and copy both sides of your health insurance card to the back of the form. This is very important information for us to have in the event that you need medical assistance while you are with us at a rehearsal or concert. We will carefully guard your personal information to ensure your privacy.
  * Conflict Form - Please check your calendar for the year. If you know of school responsibilities that will conflict with Honors Choir (such as concerts, parades and musicals), please list them so that we can plan ahead. Please remember that your school activities always come first when there is a direct conflict with an Honors Choir date, but we ask you to avoid scheduling work and family activities at the same time as Honors Choir rehearsals and concerts. Even though you have listed conflicts on your form, we still ask you to remind us of your upcoming absence by writing to Michal at least a week in advance of your absence at  yorkhonorschoir1@aol.com
*Honor Code of Conduct Form - Read carefully and be sure that both parent/guardian and student sign the Honor Code of Conduct Acceptance. You only need to hand in the Acceptance sheet.
  * Senior Choir Tuition and Outfit Order Form and check for payment- Please study this form carefully!  You only need to fill out the top portion.....our staff and volunteers will be sure that you are fitted for the correct size. If you were in Senior Honors Choir last year, please look at your formal outfit to be sure that it's still in good condition and still fits (you do not need to bring it with you on Sunday). If you were in Junior Honors Choir last year, the girls will all need to purchase a formal dress and all the guys will need to purchase a black shirt and red tie (If your tux pants and vest still fit, you can use them.....if not, you'll need to get new ones). If you have not been in Honors Choir before, you will need to purchase a new dress or formal outfit. The tuition fee of $85 is also due now, even if you do not need to purchase a formal outfit. Please be sure to bring your check written to "York County Honors Choirs".

There will be several used outfit items, at no charge, available at the formal outfit fittings. Please determine if you are interested in a used item. Bring a check as if you are purchasing new items and if you find a used item that fits, you may take the item and your check home and a revised payment reminder will be sent with you. An email will be sent as a reminder to bring the revised check to the next rehearsal on October 7.
Used Items
Guys shirts: Neck 14-14 ¬Ĺ (Small) and 17-17 ¬Ĺ (XL)
Guys Pants: Adjustable Waist 28, 31, 34, 40, 43
3 Dresses: unknown sizes

3. CONCORDE AUDITIONS THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, AT 4 PM
Concorde auditions will be held this Sunday, September 30 from 4 to 5 p.m., following our first rehearsal. Auditions are optional and are open to all members of Senior Honors Choir. The size of the group is generally 35 to 40 singers, but could be smaller depending on the number of people who audition for each part. It is important that all four parts are equally balanced (which does not necessarily mean that there will be an equal number of singers in each voice part).

If you wish to audition on September 30, you should be prepared to stay as late as 5 p.m. You will sign up that day, and then sing measures 12 through 28 from "In Flanders Fields"" for Randy and Michal (who will have their backs turned to you). You will sing individually and without accompaniment. It does not need to be memorized. All who are auditioning may listen to the auditions until it's your turn. When you have auditioned, you may stay and listen to others or leave to go home. We'll probably begin with sopranos, then altos, then tenors, and finally basses.

Rehearsals will be held from 4 to 4:45 p.m. following each Sunday afternoon Honors Choir rehearsal. Concorde Vocal Ensemble will sing "In Flanders Fields" in the November 17 concert at the Pullo. Concorde will also begin to prepare several pieces to sing with Deer Creek Chorale on March 10 and the "Requiem" of Maurice Durufle for performance with the Harrisburg Choral Society on May 5 and 6.

The results of the auditions will be included in the weekly email on Tuesday, October 2nd.

4. FREE SEAMSTRESS SERVICES ON NOVEMBER 4!
This year we are offering free seamstress services to all students who need their dress or pants hemmed or lowered. Seamstresses will come to the Honors Choir rehearsal on November 4, the day that you will receive your new outfit items. The seamstresses will measure the hem length during rehearsal on November 4 and bring the hemmed items back to the November 11 rehearsal to be ready for the concert on November 17.

If you need a hem lowered, you would bring your item to the November 4 rehearsal. The seamstress services will be subsidized by York County Honors Choirs at no cost to you.

Please fill out this survey by October 15 so that we can get a count of who will need the seamstress services on November 4.

September 18, 2018
Hi Everybody!
We are definitely looking forward to hearing all your auditions this weekend. It was great to work with about half of you in the optional rehearsal on Sunday (....and you sounded excellent, by the way!).

PLEASE NOTE: during Sunday's optional rehearsal, we decided that it's easier to sing "Verleih Uns Frieden" on "Lah" instead of "Doo". Please plan to sing "Lah" for your audition this weekend.

This email contains important information you'll need to be ready for the audition process, so please read it carefully.

IN TONIGHT'S EMAIL
1. Have you signed up for an audition time?
2. Preparing for your audition
3. Audition procedures
4. Concorde auditions
5. "West Side Story" at the Belmont Theater this weekend

1. DEADLINE FOR ONLINE SIGNUPS FOR AUDITIONS IS THIS THURSDAY, SEPT. 20
***If you have already signed-up, please be sure to check your audition time so that you'll be there at the right time!
Sign-ups will closed at 9 AM this Thursday, September 20. To choose your audition time, visit the Student Center page of our website and the link to sign up is in the Senior Honors Choir box.

Our records indicate that the following people have not yet signed up for auditions (as of today, September 19): Brandi Himes; Brynn MacDonald; Charlotte Weinstein.

It's not too late...... you can still sign up until Thursday at 9 a.m.! Audition sign-up times are available online for this Saturday, September 22 and for Sunday, September 23. When you sign up, please, ignore the numbers in parenthesis. They are only there to count the number of people signed up for that time, and they do not indicate your voice part. For audition sign-ups, it does not matter whether you are a 1 or 2.

2. PREPARING FOR YOUR AUDITION

Select your audition time - If you haven't already done so, be sure to sign up for your audition time on the Student Center page of our website by 9 a.m. this Thursday, September 20. After that time, you will still be able to access the list to confirm your time, but you will not be able to sign up.

Sing along with the rehearsal track, then practice singing with the "Audition" tracks. If you can sing your part successfully by yourself with the audition track, you should be in good shape for your audition. Rehearsal tracks are found on the Student Center page of our website.

Use pure vowels (Ooh, Oh, Ah, Eee [OoEeee] and Eh). Practice with your friends! Think about the text and try to sing with expression. Be sure your consonants can be heard. Stress the most important words in each phrase. Take deep low breaths when you sing...........

Check your posture - Are you standing tall with your head up? Practice in front of a mirror. Hold your music high enough that you do not have to look down to see it. Hold your music at chest/shoulder height (not at your waist). Be sure that you are singing out to us, not down to the floor.

Remember - The most important thing to know about your audition is that you need to be prepared. If you really know your music well, you'll do fine. If you make a mistake or two, don't worry about it...... nobody's perfect! But if it's obvious to us that you are often lost and if we can't hear you because you're singing softly and "hiding", then that's not good. Be ready and be confident!

Beware!!  Extra practice (for counting and finding your starting pitches) is needed for "Armistice 1918" and for "Sweet Rivers" (especially on pages 16 through 19) . Those spots seemed to cause us the most difficulty as we practiced them on Sunday.

3. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR AUDITION

Where - Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 311 Haines Rd., York 17402
When - Saturday, September 22 or Sunday, September 23
Where to enter the church - Go down the steps at the right side of the church (do not enter the glass doors to the sanctuary). Then enter Fellowship Hall through the double doors to your left.
When to arrive - Plan to arrive at least 15 or 20 minutes before your scheduled audition time.
Sign in - Register at the desk and get your name tag. Put your name tag up high near your shoulder so that it will be easy for us to see. Then you may all practice your part together with the CD player in Fellowship Hall.
Be sure your music is in order - The audition spots will be in this order:
[1] Gamaya (entire piece from beginning to end;
[2] Verleih uns Frieden (p.4, meas. 70 to end...... sing on "Lah");
[3] The Battle of Jericho (beginning through P. 5, meas. 18);
[4] Shed a Little Light (from p.6, meas. 27 through P. 15, meas. 65);
 [5] In Those Years, No One Slept (from P. 6, meas. 47 to the end);
[6] Armistice 1918 (beginning through P. 11, meas. 58);
[7] Sweet Rivers (from P. 13, meas. 66 to end);
[8] The Road Home (beginning through P. 4, meas. 20, first verse only).
Please mark the audition spots with paperclips so that you can find them quickly.

Your audition - When it is time for your group's audition, you will be directed to go upstairs to the sanctuary. Please wait in the back until you are called to the front. There will be music stands on which you can place the music you are not using, but you must hold your music as you're singing. Nothing needs to be memorized. As the entire group sings each audition spot along with the "AUDITION" tracks, we will walk back and forth in front of you so that we can hear each of you more clearly.
A cappella audition - After you have sung all eight audition spots, we will ask you all to sing your part together, a cappella (without accompaniment), on "The Road Home" from measure 12 through measure 20. Then we will quickly go down the row and ask each of you to sing the same thing individually, a cappella.
After your audition - We will tell you if you have successfully passed your audition. If we have concerns about your knowledge of the music or if we have questions about your voice part, we'll ask you to stay for just a moment to discuss the issue. After your audition, you will again go downstairs to have your picture taken. The pictures are just for our use so that we can get to know you better. They will not be used for publication. Please hold your name tag near your chin so that we can easily see it in the picture.
Before you leave - Be sure to put your name tag on the table and then exit by the side door.

4. CONCORDE AUDITIONS

Concorde auditions will be held on Sunday, September 30 from 4 to 5 p.m., following our first rehearsal. Auditions are optional and are open to all members of Senior Honors Choir. The size of the group is generally 35 to 40 singers, but could be smaller depending on the number of people who audition for each part. It is important that all four parts are equally balanced (which does not necessarily mean that there will be an equal number of singers in each voice part.).

If you wish to audition on September 30, you should be prepared to stay as late as 5 p.m. You will sign up that day, and then sing measures 12 through 28 from "In Flanders Fields"" for Randy and Michal (who will have their backs turned to you) in the sanctuary. You will sing individually and without accompaniment. It does not need to be memorized. All who are auditioning may sit in the sanctuary and listen to the auditions until it's your turn. When you have auditioned, you may stay and listen to others or leave to go home. We'll probably begin with sopranos, then altos, then tenors, and finally basses.

The results of the auditions will be included in the weekly email on Tuesday, October 2nd.

5. "WEST SIDE STORY" AT THE BELMONT THEATER
Five of our Honors Choir singers are on stage for the Belmont Theater's production of "West Side Story". Congratulations to: Robert Hirko, Kendall O'Keefe, Jacob Schmitt, Koby Fink, and Oliver Givens! Final performances this week will be Sept. 20-23. For tickets, please visit http://www.thebelmont.org.

September 11, 2018
Hi Everybody!

What a thrill it was to see and hear all of you on Sunday evening! Thank you, parents and singers, for making time in your busy schedules to help us begin our 21st year of the York County Senior Honors Choir. After hearing you sight-sing your audition spots, it certainly appears that we're headed for another wonderful season!

As we remember the 2,983 people who lost their lives in the attacks on September 11, 2001, 17 years ago, we give thanks for the emergency responders who rush into danger to help us and to the men and women who serve in our armed forces and put their lives on the line to protect us every day.

Before you continue to read the rest of this email, please take a moment to read this: If you have a successful audition and become a member of this year's choir, you will receive an email from us every Tuesday evening until the end of June (except Christmas day). Each email will be sent sometime between 7 and 11 p.m. If you do not receive your email....even for one week.....let us know by contacting Michal at yorkhonorschoir1@aol.com or Randy at rdy1949@gmail.com . Be sure to add our addresses to your contact list so that it won't end up in junk mail. Our email list contains the addresses that you gave us for both the singers and parents or guardians. We also ask you to add the following addresses to your contact list so that the other members of the staff can keep in touch with you: Bill Lytle ( honorschoiryc@hotmail.com), and Beth Inkrote ( binkrote5ychc@hotmail.com). We check our emails all the time, and we really need to be sure we're communicating with you....and you're communicating with us. We ask you to read each of our emails carefully and thoroughly as we offer important information about upcoming rehearsals and concerts.

You can also receive a "Remind" text each Wednesday (see "SR Choir "Remind" instructions in the blue box at the top of this page), and remember.... every Wednesday, you can also find the weekly email on our website.   2. Online sign-ups for auditions
  3. Rehearsal and Audition tracks online and on CD's/Audition hints
  4. We welcome our Logistics Coordinators
  5. Voice part changes
  6. "West Side Story" at the Belmont Theater

1. INFORMATION ABOUT THE OPTIONAL REHEARSAL THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday, September 16 - from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary at Eastminster Presbyterian Church.  This is completely optional.....you're all welcome, but you are not required to attend. We'll practice all of the music for your auditions, go over each individual voice part, give you hints about how you can be most successful, and hold "practice auditions" with anyone who wants to volunteer so that you'll know exactly how it will feel during your real audition. If you need to come late or leave early, that's fine too!
What to bring - Be sure to bring your music and a pencil, and you can also bring a bottle of water, if you wish. Parents are welcome to come and sit in the back of the sanctuary.

2. ONLINE SIGN-UPS FOR AUDITIONS
Online audition sign-ups will be available Wednesday, September 12 at 9:00 a.m. It's a good idea to sign up right away so that you can reserve the time that works best for you. 30-minute auditions will be held in groups of ten singers (10 sopranos and altos or 10 tenors and basses) on Saturday, Sept. 22 (10-11:30 and 1:30 to 4) OR Sunday, Sept. 23 (1:30 to 4) at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. When you sign up, please ignore the numbers in parenthesis. They are only there to count the number of people signed up for that time, and they do not indicate your voice part.  For auditions, it does not matter whether you are a 1 or 2. Sign-ups will close at 9 AM on Thursday, September 20. To choose your audition time, visit the Student Center page of our website and the link to sign up will be in the Senior Honors Choir box.

3. REHEARSAL AND AUDITION TRACKS and AUDITION HINTS
Rehearsal tracks on the website and CD's - You can find all rehearsal and audition tracks on our website by going to the Student Center page and clicking on "Senior Honors Choir Rehearsal Music" in the Senior Honors Choir grey box. If you are using a CD and you're having problems, please contact Randy at rdy1949@gmail.com .

Audition spots - If you didn't mark your music on Sunday evening, the eight audition spots are listed in order on the "Welcome" page in your packet. For auditions, you need to work on "Gamaya", "Verleih uns Frieden", "The Battle of Jericho", "Shed a Little Light", "In Those Years, No One Slept", "Armistice 1918 (Everyone Sang)", "Sweet Rivers", and "The Road Home". You do not need to learn "Johnny Has Gone For a Soldier" or "Soldiers Song" until after you have had a successful audition. You do not need to memorize your music for auditions.

Concorde Auditions - Concorde auditions will be held on Sunday September 30 between 4 and 5 p.m. We will listen to candidates with our backs turned so that we cannot see who is singing. Singers will sing a portion of "In Flanders Fields" individually without accompaniment. We will practice the Concorde audition during the optional rehearsal this Sunday and also during the choir rehearsal on September 30. Concorde will sing "In Flanders Fields" during the concert on November 17. The entire Concorde schedule for 2018-19 is found on the blue sheet in your music packet.

How to be really good for your audition! - Know the music really well! Be sure to have your music in the order listed on your "Welcome" sheet, and mark the beginning of each audition spot clearly. After you sing along with the "Rehearsal" track for your part, then practice singing with the "Audition" tracks. If you can sing your part successfully by yourself with the audition track, you should be in good shape for your audition. Be sure your voice is strong enough that we can hear you. It would be a great idea to get together to practice, and it's perfectly OK to take the hardest parts to your voice teacher if you study privately. Think about the text and try to sing with expression. Be sure your consonants (k, t, p, d, etc.) can be heard. Use pure vowels (Ah, Oh, Ooh, Eee [OoEeee] and Eh). Stress the most important words in each phrase. Take deep low breaths when you sing. Don't worry if you make a mistake..... Just keep calm and carry on!

4. WE WELCOME OUR LOGISTICS COORDINATORS
Mrs. Stephanie Stoolmaker and Mrs. Wendy Fraser will be our Logistics Coordinators for Senior Honors Choir this year. We are grateful to them for volunteering to assist us during rehearsals and concerts.

5. VOICE PART CHANGES
The following people have indicated that they will change voice parts:

Soprano 1 to Soprano 2 - Rebecca Olderich (We still need several more S1's to move to S2, please)
Soprano 2 to Alto 1 - Rachel Conklin, Alyssa Crane, Bekah Kelley, Sarah Weller, Molly Schraeder, Grace Shelton (anyone else, please?))
Alto 1 to Alto 2 - Annie Long, , Corinthia Kessler, Abby Lamison, Bevan Fogdall (one or two more?)
Tenor 1 to Tenor 2 - Aidan Fraser
Bass 1 to Tenor 2 - Dan Curry
Tenor to Bass 1 - Nehemiah Stubbs,
Bass 1 to Bass 2 - Galen Brubaker, Owen Davis

We will still need several more sopranos to switch to alto, and at least two more soprano 1's to switch to soprano 2. If you are still thinking about switching parts, it would probably be a good idea to do it before auditions so that you don't have to re-learn your part later. If you want to add your name to the "switch parts" list, please email Randy at rdy1949@gmail.com

6. HONORS CHOIR SINGERS IN "WEST SIDE STORY" AT THE BELMONT THEATER
Five of our Honors Choir singers are on stage for the Belmont Theater's production of "West Side Story". Congratulations to: Robert Hirko, Kendall O'Keefe, Jacob Schmitt, Koby Fink, and Oliver Givens! Performances will be Sept. 14-16 and Sept. 20-23. For tickets, please visit http://www.thebelmont.org.

 Hi Everybody!

Can't wait to see you on Sunday evening! We hope you'll be able to arrive a little early so that we can start promptly at 7 p.m. It will be pretty crowded in the Eastminster sanctuary, so you'll need to move toward the center of the rows to make more room....... and don't be afraid to sit in the front rows too!

***WE NEED THREE PARENT HELPERS FOR SUNDAY'S MEETING........We need three parent volunteers to manage registration tables prior to the meeting on Sunday. You would need to arrive at 6:00. Following the meeting, we could use your assistance to put chairs and tables away. Please contact Randy at rdy1949@gmail.com if you can help. The first volunteers will get the job!

Entering the church and parking - Please be careful on Haines Rd. as you enter and exit the parking lot (the road is sometimes very busy and many drivers tend to go faster than the speed limit). When - Please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early so that we can start promptly at 7:00 p.m.

August 14, 2018
Hi everybody!

The 21st season of the York County Senior Honors Choir is just about to begin! We're so happy that you have registered and are planning to audition.

Our first meeting will be held on Sunday, September 9th from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 311 Haines Rd., York 17402. This meeting is "mandatory", meaning that each prospective singer must be present with a parent or guardian. (If necessary, a close relative or trusted family friend may accompany the student.) The meeting is particularly important because we'll distribute music and discuss our schedule, audition procedures and formal outfits.

Music will not be distributed to student singers who are not accompanied by an adult. During the meeting, we will rehearse the music that you will be asked to sing for your 20 minute audition on either September 22nd OR 23rd. We want to be sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to have a successful audition.

Beginning today, you will receive an email each Tuesday evening throughout the season if your audition is successful. Emails will also be posted at our website (www.theYCHC.org) on this page on Wednesday mornings. For students who gave permission on their registration form, we will also send text messages each Wednesday that include a link to the email on our website.

Next week's email will contain more specific information about the meeting, audition procedures and sign-ups for audition times. Weekly emails will be sent from our Senior Honors Choir "official" address, yorkhonorschoir1@aol.com, which is Michal's Honors Choir address. In the future, please address your correspondence to yorkhonorschoir1@aol.com .

For your information, an updated season's schedule is attached at the top of this page. The schedule is still subject to change, and you will receive a final version at the meeting on September 9.

PARENTS......WE NEED HELP!! We're looking for two logistics coordinators to help us with set ups, tear downs, attendance and lots of other stuff at our rehearsals and concerts. Please see the attached form at the top of this page, and return it by Friday, August 31 if you are interested.

We're excited to see you and hear you sing together for the first time on September 9! Look for another email next Tuesday...........
