Hi again everybody!

Here's an inspiring story! Rosie Arbittier is an Honors Choir alumna who is finishing her senior year at Princeton University. Rosie has always been an advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and she uses music as a tool to include them in the larger community. Her senior project was to be a live presentation of an original musical called "Bloom", but the virus forced her to create a virtual musical on video instead. Please take a few moments to watch it at Bloom. Just scroll down on that page, read the story and then watch the video (Rosie is the one in the blue sweater)....... you'll be inspired by the very real emotions and positive feelings you see and hear. An excerpt of the lyrics tells it all:  There are good things all around you. Just look around and I think that you will see. Or at least, say thank you, for the good things that you are handed, and bloom where you are planted.

DON'T FORGET TO REGISTER FOR NEXT YEAR'S HONORS CHOIR!

  • JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES - To register, visit the Student Center page on our website, scroll down to the Senior Honors Choir grey box. Review the Returning Candidate Registration Information Packet first and then click on the Returning Candidate Online Registration Form link. CALLING ALL SENIORS!!!!!

Your plans will be listed on the Senior Recognition page of our website.

  • LAST CALL FOR SENIOR SOLOISTS - Since many of you who were scheduled to sing or play your senior solo have not had the opportunity to do so, we would love it if you would make a video of your solo that we could post on the Senior Recognition page of our website to share with everyone in the choir. Due to space limitations, we need to ask you to shorten your solo to less than 2 minutes. You can do it a cappella or accompanied and you should say your name and the name of the piece you're performing at the beginning of the video. If you need an accompanist, please contact Randy at [email protected]. Those of you who sang or played on February 16th are also invited to submit a video. Email your MOV or MP4 video file or share your YouTube link to Beth Inkrote at [email protected]. The deadline for submitting videos is this Monday, June 1.

Hello Honors Choir!

We're thinking of all of you as you finish your school year, and we know this is hardly the way you planned it....... or that anyone planned it. We're all still trying to find our way back to "normal", and though it's not easy, we do have an opportunity to view our challenges as a way to prepare to deal with future difficulties. We really don't have much choice but to make the best of it, so maybe the best thing we can do is embrace the moment and welcome the challenge. We really miss being with you, but it's still a Wonderful World and things are eventually going to be OK.

  • JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES - To register, visit the Student Center page on our website, scroll down to the Senior Honors Choir grey box. Review the Returning Candidate Registration Information Packet first and then click on the Returning Candidate Online Registration Form link. SENIORS: Have you seen the wonderful video that Mr. Casilla made for you? It's on the SENIOR PAGE of our website. Also on that page:

  •   SENIOR SURVEY - There are still 20 of you who have not let us know your plans for next year, and we need you to respond to a survey to let us know. If you're headed to college, please include what you plan to major in. Just click on Senior Survey......it's really short and easy......please do it today.
  •   SENIOR SOLOISTS - As of today, just one senior solo video has been submitted. Since many of you who were scheduled to sing or play your senior solo have not had the opportunity to do so, we would love it if you would make a video of your solo that we could post it on a private page of our website to share with everyone in the choir. Share your MOV or MP4 video via Dropbox or share your YouTube link to Beth Inkrote at [email protected]. The deadline for submitting videos is May 31.

RECORDING OF OUR NOVEMBER 24 CONCERT - Recordings of all the songs in your "Perpetual Light" concert on November 24 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church are now on the Student Center page of our website. Just click on "Perpetual Light", and you may download any or all of the tracks for yourself. It's not a professional recording, but the quality of the recording is still pretty good (although not always perfectly balanced because of the placement of the microphone), and it's a reminder of how hard you worked and how well you sang that evening.

VIRTUAL CHOIR 6 - You can sing in Eric Whitacre's "Virtual Choir 6"! The song is a beautiful new song by Eric Whitacre called "Sing Gently". It's not difficult...... all of you would be able to learn it easily. To find out more about it, go to the Virtual Choir 6 website and click on "Join the Choir". There are videos to watch and specific directions to help you make a good video. All submissions are due no later than 3 p.m. on Friday, May 22. It's free, and you still have 10 more days to submit your video.

Hang in there!

Hello Honors Choir!!

Thank you! We are delighted to say a big thank you to all who contributed to the Honors Choirs during the "Give Local York" community fund raiser last Friday. Your donations support the mission of the Honors Choirs to continue bringing talented York County singers together to do what you love to do..... sing! More than $10,000 was raised and every one of your donations, whether small or large, is important.

There's a new page on our website dedicated just to our seniors! There's a wonderful video created by Mr. Casilla that features ten of our Honors Choir seniors who submitted videos about their Honors Choir experiences. The link to the Senior Page is on the Student Center Page of our website in the Senior Honors Choir box.

SENIOR SURVEY - On the Senior Page, we will also list all of our seniors and your plans for next year, and we need you to respond to a survey to let us know about your future plans after high school. If you're headed to college, please include what you plan to major in. Just click on Senior Survey......it's really short and will take you only a minute or two.

SENIOR SOLOISTS - Since many of you who were scheduled to sing or play your senior solo have not had the opportunity to do so, we would love it if you would make a video of your solo that we could post on the Senior Page of our website to share with everyone in the choir. Due to space limitations, we need to ask you to shorten your solo even more to no more than 90 seconds. You can do it a cappella or accompanied and you should say your name and the name of the piece you're performing at the beginning of the video. If you need an accompanist, please contact Randy at [email protected]. Those of you who sang or played on February 16th are also invited to submit a video. Share your MOV or MP4 video via Dropbox please to Beth Inkrote at [email protected]. The deadline for submitting videos is May 31.

So, would you like to be part of a huge virtual choir? We still haven't found a less complicated way to make our own virtual choir video of the Honors Choir, but you can sing in Eric Whitacre's "Virtual Choir 6". Composer Eric Whitacre actually invented the virtual choir concept about ten years ago, and his videos are the gold standard. The song is a beautiful new song by Eric Whitacre called "Sing Gently". It's not difficult...... all of you would be able to learn it easily. To learn more about it, go to the Virtual Choir 6 website  and click on "Join the Choir". There are videos to watch and specific directions to help you make a good video. All submissions are due no later than 3 p.m. on Friday, May 22. It's free, and this is probably your best chance to sing in a choir this spring, so go for it!

We're hoping you and your families are all still well and safe.

April 29, 2020
Hi everybody!

We really do miss being with you and we hope you and your families are all still well and safe. There's a little light at the end of the tunnel indicating that we may begin to go back out into the world again...... cautiously and carefully........ and it's going to take time. We continue to be grateful to the doctors, nurses, first responders and all who are doing their best to keep us safe.

Thank you to all of you who responded to our "Availability Survey". Please continue to hold the dates of July 12, 19, 26 and August 2 while we wait for more information about when we may be able to safely gather again.

THIS FRIDAY, MAY 1.......GIVE LOCAL YORK! Please be sure to read the message in the blue box above from our Executive Director regarding "Give Local York" and refunds for the New York trip.

If you're feeling a little tired and weary of being cooped up and wondering when all this will end (or even if you're actually managing to feel OK), please listen to this outrageously good choir, The Aeolians of Oakwood University (in Huntsville, Alabama) as they sing We Shall Overcome. It's about as emotional and inspiring as choral singing can get. Be sure you listen all the way to the end and pay special attention to what happens at 5:41". Goose bumps!

Stay positive, be gentle and kind with others....... and we'll get through this together.

MICHAL and RANDY

April 22, 2020
Hello Honors Choir!

It was wonderful to see so many of you (more than 60!) in our Zoom meeting on Sunday evening. We are thinking of you, hoping you're hanging in there, and encouraging you to make the best of this very difficult situation. Although we couldn't sing together, it was important to just have some time to talk (except for that rude Zoom bomber who interrupted us..... 😡)

You should have received a refund from the Appell Center for any tickets you purchased for the May 31st concert...... if you have not heard from them, please call their box office at 717-846-1111. The Honors Choirs organization is continuing to seek a refund of deposits paid to Choirs of America for the Carnegie Hall concert. We will keep you informed about your refunds as soon as more information becomes available.

Singers! We're still looking for responses from more than half of you to our  Senior Honors Choir Availability Survey. (See #1 below for details.) We need a response from you even if you know that you cannot participate on any of the dates. This is the only way we'll know if we'll have enough of you to sing on any given date. Katie Hoster is also looking for videos from seniors for her "We Are the World" project (See #2 below). The deadline for both submissions is this Friday, April 24........... Please take a few moments and respond now before you forget!

1. AVAILABILITY SURVEY: We are hoping to reschedule several concerts or rehearsals (including Senior solos and recognition) during the second half of July...... IF we are permitted to gather in large groups by that time. So, we need to know if you are willing and able to participate. We're considering Sunday, July 12 (rehearsal or church concert), Sunday, July 19 (rehearsal or church concert), Sunday, July 26 (Distinguished Young Women's Program), and Sunday August 2, Monday August 3, or Tuesday August 4 (concert for a conference at Messiah College near Dillsburg. We would need to submit audition materials to be considered for participation, and we would be assigned a time and date if chosen.) Please respond to the survey at this link, Senior Honors Choir Availability Survey.  We need a response from all of you no later than this Friday, April 24, so please check your calendar and respond as soon as possible. It would be great if we could have enough of you to sing together on all four dates!

2. SENIORS ONLY (an invitation):  Here's a request from Honors Choir member Katie Hoster and her mom:
"We are putting together a reel of graduating seniors singing “We are the World”, and hoping to get as many to participate as possible. It’s not going to be chorally perfect but it’s more about THE MESSAGE and all of you leaving your mark on the world. You (the class of 2020) will be our future as well as our HISTORY. So, we're hoping many of you will participate in sharing your strength and providing a message of hope for the future to come."

"We really would love as many seniors (class of 2020) to be part of it as we can get. All you need to do is send us a video of yourself SINGING (or you could play an instrument) the ENTIRE SONG. Katie has the music to send you to sing with. (contact her for the info). We will edit a small portion of your video onto a video reel that we will make public on social media sites. We will also be sending it to NYC and BAA, an organization in NYC that she has been part of for 5 years..

You are asked to submit your video by this Friday, April 24. For information, please contact Katie Hoster at [email protected] or text her at (717) 421-9478 or follow her and direct message or Facebook message her at katieehoster (Instagram) or Kate Hoster (Facebook).

3. GIVE LOCAL YORK, MAY 1, 2020  -
We are looking forward to the Give Local York campaign on May 1st. If you've been wondering how you can help our local nonprofits, this is a great way to give. A small donation adds to the donations of others, and collectively we can help our nonprofits get through this time of uncertainty.
Click on the Give Local York logo on our website homepage, www.theYCHC.org for more information.
Over 300 York County nonprofits are participating, including York County Honors Choirs.

Be patient, stay calm, stay positive. This too shall pass.....

April 8, 2020 - Message from your directors
Hello Honors Choir,

We hope you are well and safe. We're doing the right thing as we keep our distance from each other to slow the spread of the corona virus. It's not fun and it's not easy, but things could be even worse if we weren't willing to make sacrifices now. So many things in our lives have changed...... including our upcoming Honors Choir opportunities. Please carefully read the message above from our Executive Director Bill Lytle.

PLEASE NOTE: We have also cancelled our concert scheduled for May 10 at First Church of the Brethren and the proposed concert scheduled for May 17 at Paradise Lutheran Church. However, we still hope to have a chance to hear you sing together again, so please check next week's message for information regarding possible performance dates later in the summer.

SENIORS: We would like to acknowledge your time with the choirs by producing a video (thank you Mr. Casilla) of each one of you answering one of several questions. Mr. Casilla will combine your videos to create a keepsake of this year's senior class. We hope to post the video on our website and maybe, if time allows, on our "Give Local York" fundraising page. Please make a video with your phone (MOV or MP4), save to Google Drive and share your link with Mr. Casilla at [email protected]. Pick one of the following questions and please keep your video to 20-30 seconds or less. The deadline for your submission is next Wednesday, April 15.

  •   What was one of your favorite moments or events during your time spent in Junior and/or Senior Honors Choir?
  •   What attracted you to Honors Choir?
  •   How has Honors Choir impacted your future?
  •   Special assistance or quirk of Randy and/or Michal?
  •   What Honors Choir tradition means the most and why?
  •   Favorite Honors Choir song and/or concert venue?

HOLD THE DATE....... Sunday, April 19 at 7 p.m. You are invited to attend an online Honors Choir Zoom meeting. It's been SO long since we've been together........we never could have guessed that when we left Eastminster after our concert on February 16, we wouldn't be together again for months and months. So, look for a Zoom invitation link in next week's message for Sunday April 19 at 7 p.m. (That's when you would have been starting your concert that evening anyway.....)

We're not going to be able to sing together during this online meeting because it doesn't really work very well on Zoom, but we can just reconnect, say "hi", found out how you're doing and answer any questions you may have. You are not required to be there, and we're not going to take attendance or anything like that, but we hope a lot of you will be able to join us. More details next week......

Take care, stay safe and stay calm. We're going to get through this together.
MICHAL and RANDY

April 1, 2020
Hello Honors Choir,

We're thinking of all of you as you stay home to do your part to slow and eventually end this silent, invisible epidemic we're facing. We know how difficult it is for you to lose your routine and be away from your friends. We miss you and hope that all of you and everyone in your family is staying safe and well. Try to stay calm, stay positive and "let it be".

“Let It Be” was written by the Beatles member Paul McCartney after he had a dream with his late mother (Mary) telling him, “Let it be.” This was during a very difficult period of time when he felt that the Beatles might be breaking up. He says of the dream, “It was lovely. I woke up with a great feeling. It was really like she had visited me at this very difficult point in my life and gave me this message: Be gentle, don’t fight things, just try and go with the flow and it will all work out.”

 THIS WEEK'S NEWS!

  •   APRIL 19 CONCERT POSTPONED - As you might have guessed, we will not be able to have our April 19 concert at Paradise Lutheran Church.
  •   SAVE THE DATE - Please save the date of May 17 on your calendar. If enough of you are available, we will re-schedule our concert at Paradise Lutheran Church for 7 p.m. that evening. Later this month, we'll re-evaluate the virus situation and make more decisions regarding our concerts in May.
  •   SENIOR SOLOISTS scheduled to sing on March 29 and April 19 will be re-scheduled for May 10 and/or May 17.
  •   NEW YORK TRIP - We're staying positive and taking it a few weeks at a time! At this point, our concert in Carnegie Hall is still on. If your plans have changed and you would now like to join the choir on the NYC trip, June 26-28, please know that we might be able to accommodate you. You would have to be flexible with your Broadway musical choice. We're still planning and waiting to see the status of the trip, but if you want to commit awhile, we would require a permission form and $80 deposit (form found on the FORMS page of www.theYCHC.org).
  •   NY TRIP PAYMENTS - We remain optimistic that we will be able to sing in Carnegie Hall on June 27. Checks/money orders for the NY trip should be sent to: York County Honors Choirs PO Box 827 York, PA 17405 (Please do not bring payments to concerts.) You may split the payments for the remaining balance or use your own plan. Please use the Carnegie Trip payment coupons found on the FORMS page of our website. The final trip balance is due by May 15. (If you wish to contribute to the Carnegie Hall fund to underwrite student trip scholarships, please indicate the gift on the payment coupon.)
  •   SATURDAY, MAY 30 REHEARSAL - The rehearsal at Zion UM Church on Carlisle Rd. is VERY important for everyone (even if you are not going to NY.) We will be practicing our combined program with the Junior Honors Choir that will performed on May 31 at the Strand and on June 27 in Carnegie Hall. We have a lot to do, so please plan to be flexible that day...... the beginning and ending times of the rehearsal are subject to change. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. is our best guess at this time.
  •   TICKETS - for our May 31 concert in the Strand Theater at the Appell Center are available by going to the homepage of our website at www.theychc.org and clicking on "tickets" in the blue box under "Upcoming Events". Plans are for tickets for the Carnegie Hall concert on June 27 to be available sometime this month.

Hi Everybody,

We're really going to miss seeing you and hearing you this Sunday evening. It seems like waaaay more than 5 1/2 weeks since we were last together. It's the right thing to do, though. We all need to do our part to keep the virus from spreading. We hope you and your families are all well and finding creative ways to safely get through this unprecedented, far-reaching pandemic that has caused so much pain and sorrow for so many families around the world.

Bored? Wish you could get together with others to sing? Wanna hear amazing singing from some a cappella groups you may not have heard before? Try the following links (Be sure to listen with headphones or good speakers to get the full effect):

Voctave - "Someone Like You' (from "Jekyll and Hyde") at Someone Like You. All the singers are incredible, but check out the bass section on the right and the soprano on the far left. If you don't get goosebumps, you may not be completely awake....... And they're not lip synching!
Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir - " Lux Aurumque" at Lux Aurumque. This was done by having singers from all over the USA and around the world sing their part along with a master track. Then all the tracks are mixed together to produce a "virtual choir". It would be wonderful to have our own "Virtual Honors Choir", but technically, it's kind of tricky to put it together. Do any of you have any idea how to create a virtual choir online? If you do have any ideas or knowledge about this, please contact Randy at [email protected]. If we can't get together physically, maybe we could sing together online...... maybe?
Conspirare - "I Love You/What a Wonderful World" at I Love You. Well, this isn't a cappella, but you all know it, of course. The pianist/soloist is Craig Hella Johnson and the choir is his group called Conspirare, an adult professional choir based in Austin, Texas. He is the arranger of this piece and he also arranged "Let the River Run" that we sang two years ago. He's really a genius at taking popular songs and turning them into beautiful choral arrangements

 THIS WEEK'S NEWS!

  •   REMINDER - Our concert at Church of the Open Door this Sunday, March 29, is canceled. We're hopeful that we may be able to have our concert on April 19, but it's still too early to tell if that will be possible. The Senior soloists scheduled to sing on March 29 will be re-scheduled for April 19 and/or May 10.
  •   NEW YORK TRIP - We're still planning to go!
Checks/money orders for the NY trip should be sent to: York County Honors Choirs PO Box 827 York, PA 17405 (Please do not bring payments to concerts.) You may split the payments over the next three months for the remaining balance or use your own plan.
March 18, 2020

Hi Everybody,

So much has changed so fast....... Just a week ago, we would have never guessed that we'd all be feeling anxious and staying home in the midst of a worldwide crisis. There's great irony in our case......one of the best things people can do to relieve anxiety and connect with others is to sing together, but this situation prevents us from doing exactly that. Sooooo....

  •   First, the bad news - Our concert at Church of the Open Door on March 29 is cancelled. We want all of you to be safe and healthy, and it's clear that this crisis will not pass by the end of this month. We'll need to continue to practice social distancing for awhile, and having 100 of you standing next to each other is just not gonna work right now........ We would be delighted if the crisis would ease enough for us to have our concert on April 19, but we'll have to wait a couple of weeks to see if that's possible. The Senior soloists scheduled to sing on March 29 will be re-scheduled for April 19 and/or May 10.
  •   And.... the good news - We have an opportunity to help each other by doing our part to prevent the spread of the virus......washing our hands often, avoiding large groups, covering our coughs and sneezes......so far, there are no confirmed cases in York County, and it would be nice to keep it that way. We can also use our free time to offer assistance to those who are at greater risk - older people and those with health problems. Who knows? Your kindness might make the difference for someone who really needs help. And we can also help by being careful with our use of social media. Don't spread rumors, and avoid angry people online. Stay calm and be positive.

THE WEEKLY NEWS AND REMINDERS:

  •   Musicals - We assume that the musicals at Eastern HS ("Chicago") and SouthWestern HS ("Big") have been postponed or canceled. Can someone give us an update?
  •   All-State Choir- We now know of three members of Senior Honors Choir who were chosen by audition to sing in All-State Choir. Congratulations to Emily Danczyk, Aidan Fraser and Anthony Wood, Is there anyone else that we don't know about?
  •   District Jazz Festival- Unfortunately, the PMEA District 7 Jazz Festival scheduled for this weekend has been canceled due to the coronavirus. The singers from Senior Honors Choir would have been Galen Brubaker, Owen Davis, Madeline Gorski, Isaiah Hicks, Ronan Mailey and Alli Reeser. (Are there still going to be auditions for All-State Jazz?)
  •   Distinguished Young Women- Congratulations to five Senior Honors Choir juniors who have been chosen to participate in the Distinguished Young Women's program - Hope Allen, Alyssa Crane, Holly Hinchcliff, Brenna Richard, and Addison Sands.
  •   NY Trip payments - Since our concert in Carnegie Hall is more than three months away, we are optimistic that we will be able to sing on that amazing stage on June 27. Checks/money orders for the NY trip should be sent to: York County Honors Choirs PO Box 827 York, PA 17405 (Please do not bring payments to rehearsals or concerts.) You may split the payments over the next three months for the remaining balance or use your own plan. Please use the Carnegie Trip payment coupons found on the FORMS page of our website. The final trip balance is due by May 15. (If you wish to contribute to the Carnegie Hall fund to underwrite student trip scholarships, please indicate the gift on the payment coupon.)
  •   Saturday, May 30 - The rehearsal at Zion UM Church on Carlisle Rd. is VERY important for everyone (even if you are not going to NY.) Hello Honors Choir!

What a great evening we had on Sunday.........you really know how to rise to the occasion! Thanks to all of you for your energy and enthusiasm, not to mention your excellent singing. Your sound was especially warm and rich since you didn't sing so loud all the time. The dynamic contrasts were much more dramatic!

Special thanks to all our soloists, senior soloists, Collin for playing percussion, Abi for announcing, Emma, Sarah, Alyssa, Holly and Brenna for choreography, Mrs. Fraser, Mrs. Stoolmaker and Mrs. Gaetjen for watching over us, and to Carol Heagy for her excellent accompaniment. The night was even more special because Judy Simpson and Carlos Casilla were with us! Extra special thanks go to our huge audience for their support and encouragement. Extra-super special thanks to all in the audience who had to stand, and apologies to those who couldn't get in and had to go home instead.

Hello Honors Choir!

The last six weeks of rehearsals have been amazing! Not only did it NOT SNOW 😁, but your attendance was excellent and you worked so hard. Last year, we had to cancel our first concert due to rotten weather, but this year, we're ready! We need to fix a few things (some choreography, potato/potahto, tomato/tomahto, and a few other little spots), but otherwise, we should be able to have fun and spread a lot of love and joy to our audience. Please check the schedule below to be sure you arrive at the right time.

PLEASE REMEMBER that the first payment for the NY trip is due by this Monday, Feb. 15.
Mail check(s) / money order(s) to: York County Honors Choirs PO Box 827 York, PA 17405 (Please do not bring payments to rehearsals or concerts.) You may split the payments over the next four months for the remaining $600 or use your own plan. Please use the Carnegie Trip payment coupons found on the FORMS page of our website. The final trip balance is due by May 15. (If you wish to contribute to the Carnegie Hall fund to underwrite student trip scholarships, please indicate the gift on the payment coupon.)

ALSO PLEASE REMEMBER: If you must be absent from a concert due to a conflict or illness, you are asked to send an email to Michal at [email protected], even if you have already listed it on the conflict form. Please remember that we need to know the reason for your absence.

February 5, 2020
Hi Everybody!

We have just one more rehearsal....... and then it's "Show Time!" Please note that rehearsal will begin at 2:00 for the full choir this week. We'll spend the first part of the rehearsal fixing and polishing a few spots in our music, and then we'll have a "practice concert" in the sanctuary between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. Concorde will rehearse from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 to 4:45 p.m.

On Sunday, we sang "O Vos Omnes" for the first time. This is the piece that was commissioned just for our concert in Carnegie Hall, and you will be singing it at the end of the concert with the Junior Honors Choir and all the other choirs that will be performing in the festival. It will be a world premiere, conducted by the composer, Andrea Ramsey. We will not be singing it in our concerts, so we collected the music to be sure we'd always have it when we need it.
PLEASE NOTE: There is now a file of the sheet music at the bottom of the Rehearsal Tracks page. Please download it, print a copy for yourself, and then practice it with the rehearsal track. You are expected to know this piece for the Carnegie Hall concert...... and it's supposed to be memorized. 😵

PLEASE REMEMBER: If you must be absent from a rehearsal or concert due to a conflict or illness, you are asked to send an email to Michal at [email protected], even if you have already listed it on the conflict form. Please remember that we need to know the reason for your absence.
