Dear Senior Honors Choir,

Thank you all for your flexibility in cancelling last week’s rehearsal. Thanks to our careful planning and your efforts in complying with the regulations we have in place (temperatures taken at arrival, chairs at least 6ft apart, using hand sanitizer when entering, wearing masks, not singing inside, limiting the outside singing time to no more than 15-20 minutes while wearing masks and socially distanced, etc) we do not believe that anyone was exposed, but took the week off more out of an abundance of caution. While we are comfortable and proud of the protocols we have in place, the organization was protected by open, honest communication. Our singer was “fine” at practice, developing symptoms later on. The family contacted the SHC of the case and positive test. This full loop of cooperation is the model for effective control.

As we prepare to resume our activities on November 1st, take a listen to your parts for “My Soul’s Been Anchored in the Lord” on the rehearsal/audition page on our website. These recordings will help you solidify the parts we introduced on October 11th. Also, November 1st will be the first rehearsal that we will be in mixed formation. I am currently finishing up the seating chart for each group, and will share it in the next newsletter so that everyone knows which group they are assigned to prior to our rehearsal.

I miss you all a lot and I look forward to seeing you on November 1st!

Sincerely,
Carlos Casilla

Hello Senior Honors Choir Members!

Congratulations to the following students who successfully auditioned for Senior Honors Choir!!!!
Senior Honors Choir 2020-21
I loved hearing all of your auditions during this past week, and I cannot wait to start rehearsals with all of you!
Remember: if you own your own copy of Alway Something Sings please bring it to rehearsals.

As you all know, our first rehearsal will be this coming Sunday, September 20th. For more information regarding when/where your section will be rehearsing, please see the September 9th newsletter below. Before we gather for our first official rehearsal, there are a few things that I would like to make you aware of, and that will ensure the safety of all of us involved:

We will take temperatures at the door (anyone with a temperature above 100°Fahrenheit will be asked to go home).
Masks will be required while rehearsing and at any YCHC related activities (YCHC-engraved masks will be distributed later in the semester, until then please provide your own mask)
When you arrive at rehearsal, only go to your designated rehearsal space.
You will find your name tag on the table and pick it up (this is how we will take attendance, in order to minimize contact with signing with a shared pen).
If you will be absent for the current week, please use the Attendance Box now found in the Senior Honors Choir grey box of the Student Center page of our website.

Again, congratulations to you all! I look forward to making music with you this year.

Sincerely,
Carlos Casilla

Dear Students and Families,

The time is almost here!! We have our opening meeting this coming Sunday, August 30th at 5:00pm. During this meeting you will hear from Bill Lytle, our Executive Director, regarding the overall measures that we are taking as an organization this year. After that, I will discuss details regarding our fall season, auditions, and rehearsals.

We will share a Zoom Meeting invite/link with you closer to Sunday. As we prepare for it, we are asking that, if possible, families gather around one device in order to allow all families to be able to participate in the meeting.

There will be scanned music for the audition, as well as practice tracks available on Monday, September 1st. You will have until Sunday, September 13th by 6:00pm to turn in your audition video. We will discuss this in detail during our meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday for our meeting!

Hello Students and Families,

Thank you so much to those who filled out the Alway Something Sings survey. The results really gave us a good idea as to how many copies we need to provide this year. I can’t believe we are only a week and a half away from our Opening Meeting on August 30th at 5:00pm!! I am looking forward to seeing you all through Zoom so that you can hear all of the detailed information regarding the auditions, and what we have planned for the season.

Until then, if you have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Please read the announcement below from the YCHC Staff and Board regarding this season.

Carlos Casilla, YCSHC Artistic Director, [email protected]

To our dedicated Families, Teachers, and Community – A Season Update

As an organization, York County Honors Choirs has had some tough decisions to make. We are monitoring all of the organization’s activities with the current information that is available. Please know that our decisions are never made lightly, and are in the best interests of the singers and our staff. We ask for patience as we continue to monitor school district and government decisions.

Elementary Choral Festival – March 27, 2021
YCHC will monitor mandates and come to a decision about the festival in the new year.

Junior Honors Choir
YCHC has made the difficult decision to suspend Junior Honors Choir operations for the fall. However, JHC is hoping to start the season in early 2021 at a safe and appropriate time. The season might look a little different, but we will still offer music education, team building, leadership and character development with the hope of performing for our community.

Updates will be posted on the Homepage and Student Center page of our website in November and December. Registered singers and York County music teachers will be informed of any changes.

For those who already registered and paid the $40 registration fee, we ask for your patience until January, 2021, when we plan to offer the education and audition phase of our season. The registration fee covers the costs associated with choral music purchases and initial instruction time. If you have special circumstances, please contact Executive Director Bill Lytle at [email protected]. Updated registration information will be available on the Student Center page of the York County Honors Choirs website in September.

Senior Honors Choir
This fall, Senior Honors Choir will concentrate on building a community of young people who share common interests, while offering music education and performance development. As we monitor school district and government decisions, we will communicate changes through the weekly director newsletter on the Student Center page of our website.

The August 30th opening meeting and fall auditions for registered students will be virtual. Performances will be scheduled when it is safe to do so. Unless regulations mandate differently, rehearsals will be held in small groups at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, with CDC guidelines followed.

Thank you for your thoughts and support
As we keep our Honors Choir students and families in our thoughts during this difficult time, we ask that you reciprocate those thoughts and support for our organization.

Thank you.
YCHC staff and board

Hello Students and Families,

I am looking forward to beginning this season with you all! But first, we need to go through the audition process. As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, this year’s auditions will happen virtually. You will receive the audition music during the week of our August 30th meeting. After that, you will have two full weeks to submit your successful audition!

One of the pieces that we will prepare this semester will be Alway Something Sings by Dan Forrest. Many of you are familiar with this piece, as both the Senior and the Junior Honors Choir programmed it in last year’s repertoire. If you are a returning Senior Choir member, or if you are coming from the Junior Choir, please take 30 seconds to fill out this survey regarding whether or not you still own a copy of Alway Something Sings.

As always, we want to take the time to celebrate our members who have been awarded special recognitions. Four of our members were awarded scholarships in the 2020 York County Distinguished Young Women’s Program in July, and three of our members have been selected by audition to sing in the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) All-National Honors Ensemble Mixed Choir. Congratulations on your achievements!!

2020 York County Distinguished Young Women’s Program

Hope Allen - Talent Award; Alyssa Crane - Be Your Best Self Award; Brenna Richard - Talent Award, Self-Expression Award, and 4th Runner-up for Distinguished Young Woman; and Addie Sands - Interview Award.

August 5, 2020
Hello Students and Families,

I am thrilled to share my first newsletter with you as the new conductor for the Senior Honors Choir (SHC). As I type this letter, I am amazed by the number of students and families who are interested in being a part of this wonderful organization, regardless of our current circumstances. That being said, I want to start my time with you by building our relationship with transparency in regards to each step that we take as an organization, in light of these extraordinary times.

Before I continue, I would like to remind us all of our mission as an organization:

“The mission of the York County Honors Choirs is to engage the hearts and minds of its singers by providing choral education and performance opportunities to diverse young people, from throughout York County. As a result of our efforts and activities, we enhance the quality and culture of our community.”

This year has brought many challenges to all of us. Nevertheless, it is also important to emphasize that we are an organization that is more than just singing. We build a loving community through the relationships that we create during our rehearsals; a community that values each member for who they are, and provides them with a place to be with people who share similar interests. That community-building aspect of our organization will be the foundation of our Fall season. We will focus on “providing choral education” and we will work to “enhance the quality and culture of our community.”

Please take a look at the updated Senior Honors Choir 2020-2021 Calendar. In order to follow the current CDC guidelines, we have made the following changes:

Our August 30th opening meeting for students and families will be via Zoom.
Auditions for the Fall season will be virtual (a pre-recorded video).
Our November concert is cancelled.

Please, do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions and/or concerns.

Sincerely,
Carlos Casilla
YCSHC Artistic Director
[email protected]

PS: Detailed information regarding the day-to-day operations of rehearsals will be shared during our August 30th Meeting.
