Junior Honors Choir
Secondary to family, Donna Knott’s passion for encouraging youth through the art of choral music has not waned during her thirty-two years of public school teaching, community choirs and church music. Mrs. Knott is in her 18th season as the Artistic Director of the York County Junior Honors Choir, and 12th season as the Artistic Director of the York County Elementary Choral Festival. Mrs. Knott received the American Choral Directors Association of Pennsylvania, Eileen M. Hower Memorial Award for her proven record of commitment to developing voices, particularly at the middle school level; her high artistic standards; active involvement in ACDA; and her passionate, positive, energetic, and joyful approach to her work.

Mrs. Knott is an active middle school festival conductor, clinician and adjudicator throughout Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey and Maryland. She is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) having served a six-year term on the Board. A Graduate of West Chester University (B.S. Music Education) and Penn State University (Master of Education), Mrs. Knott’s thesis focused on an extensive study of the developing male voice.

After teaching secondary choral music in the West York Area School District for 10 years, she served as Director of Music at Zion United Methodist Church in York. She coordinated, directed and prepared staff for eleven choral and instrumental ensembles; conducted the State Youth Choir at the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State University and hosted various American Chorister Guild Children and Youth Choral Conferences. She founded and chaired the Zion Concert Series and is most proud of their endeavors to earn grants in order to offer free polished musical performances, music scholarships for youth of York County, and Senior Recital opportunities for graduating high school and college students from the York County area.

Mrs. Knott has sung professionally with the Mississippi Opera Company and Fred Waring & the Pennsylvanians (1984). After joining Mr. Waring’s staff in 1988 she enjoyed 22 years as Director of the Fred Waring Elderhostel Workshops at Penn State University and Co-Director of the Fred Waring U.S. Chorus. This group of 100 youth from all over the U.S. presented three concerts at the Eisenhower Auditorium on the Campus of Penn State University, a WPSX television program and a concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Synergy Vocal Ensemble

York County Junior Honors Choir is comprised of 100 select singers in grades 7, 8 and 9 from 21 public and private school districts, homeschools, churches, or voice studios of York County, PA. Under the direction of Mrs. Donna Knott, the group has been invited to perform in Heinz Chapel, the Naval Academy Chapel, New Bethel Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., American Choral Directors Eastern Division and State Conferences, PA Music Educators State Conference and invited to sing for the Music Education Department of Penn State University.

The group has enjoyed choral exchange programs with numerous public school choral programs throughout the state. They have participated in choral workshops with such conductors as Nick Page, composer, song leader, conductor of world music; Dr. Anthony Leach, director of Penn State’s “Essence of Joy,” nationally known composer and conductor of world music; as well as Christine Jordanoff from Duquesne University and Dr. Lon Beery from Syracuse University. They have also performed Rutter’s Mass of the Children with York Symphony, sung with the University of Pittsburgh Men’s Glee Club, the Penn State Men’s Glee Club, Essence of Joy and Orianna Singers, the Heinz Chapel Choir under the direction of Chanticleer alumnus John Goldsmith, and Morehouse College Men's Glee Club. In March, the choir was honored to perform with the Keystone State Boychoir and Gettysburg College Concert Choir. Junior Honors Choir acts as mentors for York County’s annual Elementary Choral Festival and travels annually to various schools in York County to promote choral education, underlining the importance of community and leadership.

In addition to Junior Honors Choir, the 40-member Synergy Vocal Ensemble is available to sing in smaller venues. The Ensemble has performed with the David Benoit Jazz Quartet and as part of “Christmas with The Celts.”

More than just a choir, this unique collaboration with choral directors, private music instructors, and families from all over York County gives students the opportunity to share their talents with others who have the same love of music, higher level of dedication, and desire for excellence. As the students return to their home schools and neighborhoods, they serve as leaders and positive role models, and develop an appreciation for community involvement that extends beyond their school years.

York County Honors Choirs is organized and maintained by a volunteer Board of Directors that is responsible for managing the choirs’ operations. York County businesses, grants, sponsors, and private patrons support the group financially. Please visit our website to make a valuable donation to the future of our choirs.  www.theYCHC.org

Susan Feldmann is thrilled to serve as Associate Director of the Junior Honors Choir. Until 2000, she worked at York Hospital as a registered nurse in step-down cardiac care. She later returned to school and earned her degree in music education from York College in 2008, with a concentration in voice. Sue enjoys combining her nursing background with music, using vocal technique to help singers learn how to shape the vocal tract to make healthy singing easier. She previously served in music ministry for 30 years working primarily with youth in grades 2-12. Sue has an active studio of voice and piano students and also enjoys serving as a piano accompanist for choruses at area schools.
